School District 60 to implement transportation fees in September

by ,

first_imgThe situation was first presented to SD 60 in the 2012/2013 year when the Ministry of Education removed the line item for transportation and replaced with a Student Location Factor that resulted in a reduction of funding over three years. SD 60 was already running at $185,000 over their allocation for transportation and with the Ministry of Education changes the district would be forced into a shortfall in funding of approximately $700,000 for 2014/2015.Secretary Treasurer Doug Boyd says attempts to work with government have been unsuccessful and as a result it forced SD 60 to make a decision on transportation fees.“Our efforts have been directly with our Minister and our MLA and they’ve resulted in no change,” he says. “The technical review committee that it was referred to gave us a response that indicated that it will remain unchanged so as a result it was recommended to bring the issue here to a board meeting for a decision regarding implementation of a transportation fee.”- Advertisement -Members of SD 60 stated that they would work as quickly as possible to get the information out to the affected families. It is still to be determined how fee collection will take place or the exact figure families will be faced with as it will be done on a per student charge.Covering the shortfall in the transportation budget is already costing the school district $370,000 this year.last_img read more

Pep Guardiola reveals what his priority is for next season

by ,

first_img1 Pep Guardiola wants to see the club score more goals next season Pep Guardiola says scoring more goals is his top priority as he looks ahead to his second season as Manchester City manager.Wastefulness in front of goal has been their main weakness during a disappointing campaign, according to the boss.City were regarded as one of the Premier League title favourites last August but go into their final game at Watford on Sunday still needing a point to secure a top-four place.“I have learned you have to score more goals,” said Guardiola. “Especially at home we dropped a lot of points.“We can accept an opponent creating two, three or maybe four chances – it is impossible to avoid that – but we didn’t score enough goals at home.“So, we have to play a little bit better to create more chances to score goals if we want to reduce that gap. Then maybe our gap against Chelsea and Tottenham will be shorter. If we don’t, it will be the same.”City are third in the table, 15 points behind champions Chelsea and eight below Spurs.Victory this weekend will clinch third but with Liverpool two points back and Arsenal just another behind them, Champions League football is not yet guaranteed.Securing third, and direct entry to Europe’s top club competition, would put the club in good heart for the summer and aid recruitment during what is expected to be a close-season revamp.Guardiola, however, believes he already has the attacking power he needs, but must coax more goals out of a number of players. He cited the example of Kevin De Bruyne, who has scored only five times this season but gone close to more by hitting the woodwork nine times in the Premier League and once in Europe. He said: “Kevin De Bruyne is the player with the mosts assists in the league (16) and he made 10, 11, 12 crossbars. So the difference between the crossbar and the goal is maybe centimetres.“If you just score half of those situations maybe it is seven or eight more points. It is just to be a little bit more precise in those situations. I think we have the quality of players to score goals.”last_img read more

Santos To Quit Greece After World Cup

by ,

first_imgATHENS – Greek national soccer team coach Fernando Santos said he will not return to lead the team after next month’s World Cup in Brazil, deciding not to seek renewal of his contract after a four-year run.Santos, from Portugal, took over the reins from Otto Rehhagel in July 2010, who won a European championship in 20o4 but couldn’t reclaim the glory after that, with Greece failing to advance out of the first round of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The decision was announced by Giorgos Sarris, the President of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO): “I’ve just informed the members of EPO administrative council that Fernando Santos will end his tenure with the Greek national team after the World Cup finals,” he said.Santos led the team to the UEFA EURO 2012 quarter-finals and to their third World Cup and second in a row, where the team will face Colombia, Japan and Ivory Coast in Rio de Janeiro. Before taking over the national side, Santos had a successful decade managing major Greek clubs such as AEK Athens, Panathinaikos and PAOK Salonika and had become a well-known figure in the country. He didn’t elaborate on the reasons why he is stepping down other than to say that he wanted to think about his next career step without pressure and decide what is best for him.The 59-year old manager lives permanently in Greece.
