Apple pulls WikiLeaks App from the App Store

by ,

first_imgThe mass exodus from any association with WikiLeaks continues. The organization began to feel the hurt in the pocketbook when Mastercard and PayPal stopped processing payments for the website within the same week earlier this month. PayPal made the move after they were informed by the U.S. State Department that WikiLeaks’ actions were illegal as revealed by PayPal’s V.P. of Platform, Osama Bedier, who confirmed the reason for the move at LeWeb ’10. Mastercard also cited WikiLeaks engagement in illegal activities as the reason why they pulled the plug on processing transactions for the website. The moves by Mastercard and PayPal followed actions by WikiLeaks’ DNS provider and Amazon Web Services, both of which  stopped providing hosting services to the company. Considering the limb that WikiLeaks finds itself out on it’s probably not too surprising that yet another company has made a move to distance itself from the website as well. An iPhone and iPad app, which allowed users to access contents on the organization’s website, was pulled by Apple from the App Store this week. The WikiLeaks App had a very short shelf life considering it had only been available for three days. The app’s developer had promised to donate $1 from the app’s $1.99 price tag, for every download. A spokeswoman for Apple, Trudy Muller, stated that the reason for the app’s removal was due to the fact that it violated developer guidelines. She went on to say, “Apps must comply with all local laws and may not put an individual or group in harm’s way.”Read more at the New York Timeslast_img read more
