first_img3 3 Harry Kane netted England’s second 3center_img Goals from Harry Kane and Gary Cahill ensured England overcame Nigeria 2-1 in a pre-World Cup friendly at Wembley on Saturday. The Three Lions were 2-0 up at half time, having put in a very impressive performance, though an early second-half strike from Alex Iwobi halted Gareth Southgate’s side’s momentum. The game began positively for England as Gary Cahill headed home from a Kieran Trippier corner with less than seven minutes on the clock.Raheem Sterling had a couple of chances, but lacked end product, breaking the offside trap before wasting a cross and then firing over when well-placed.However, he did provide the pass for captain Harry Kane to double England’s lead after 39 minutes as his shot slipped under the body of Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi halved the advantage two minutes into the second period, firing home from just inside the box after an Odion Ighalo shot struck the post. This prompted a dip in England’s performance before Sterling made headlines once again as he was rightly booked for diving later in the game. The result was ultimately seen out, but not in the most emphatic fashion.Star man – Gary CahillIn the first half, Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard and Gary Cahill all put in impressive shifts, though Cahill was the only one of this trio to carry his performance into the second period. His early goal was a positive start for the Three Lions and he helped organise England’s defence, ensuring they didn’t capitulate.Moment of the matchUnfortunately the moment that will likely generate the most headlines from this match was Raheem Sterling’s second half simulation. The 23-year-old has had a tumultuous week, but didn’t help himself as he threw his body to the floor in an attempt to win a penalty. He was rightly carded. What the fans are saying Line-ups:England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Cahill, Trippier, Dier, Alli (Delph 82), Young (Rose 68), Sterling (Rashford 73), Lingard (Loftus-Cheek 67), Kane (Welbeck 73)Nigeria: Uzoho, Idowu, Ekong, Balogun (Omeruo 45), Onazi (Etebo 45), Mikel, Obi (Ogu 45), Shehu (Ebuehi 45), Ighalo (Iheanacho 77), Moses (Musa 63), Iwobilast_img read more
