…DDL reportedly using product for 15% of its power gridAhead of Guyana’s official start date for oil production in 2020, local companies that utilise vast amounts of energy to facilitate operations are actively being encouraged to pursue energy sources that burn at a cleaner rate and have less impact on the environment. It is against these considerations that the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) partnered with Trinidadian-based company ICON LNG toICON President and Chief Financial Officer, John Thompson told the gathering at Cara Lodge that natural gas is a safe and natural fuelprovide the beverage giant with natural gas supply on a pilot programme for six months.ICON specialises in providing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an alternative to replace diesel, gasoline and heavy oil fuel. The company highlighted that the gas is lighter and safer to transport than propane gas.At the launch at Cara Lodge Hotel on Wednesday, DDL Chairman Komal Samaroo announced that the project’s technical feasibility has already been proven and noted that for the next few months, DDL will conduct financial and economic evaluation of the programme which will assess its viability. Samaroo stressed that with power taking up the second highest cost, the company saw it fit to select natural gas “to tackle” the cost that power rakes up as DDL operates on a 24-hour basis.“DDL believes in the future of natural gas as a form of reliable energy which will help pilot Guyana’s prosperity… our country is poised for greater economic buoyancy with the oil sector,” the DDL Chairman noted.“Given Guyana’s quest for clean energy, this project resonates very well with national policy,” he added. While ICON and DDL officials were reluctant to go into financial arrangements, Guyana Times was told that DDL is currently running on 15 per cent natural gas capacity for a few hours a day. It was pointed out that once ICON’s power is switched off; DDL reverts to using diesel for much of its capacity. During the launch, the company’s Chairman had however reminded that DDL produces steam through its methane gas plant.ICON President and Chief Financial Officer, John Thompson said the pilot programme with DDL is still in the initial stages. The gas will be obtained from Trinidad and in the next six months, six 20-foot containers will be shipped and it will last for 90 days. Thompson told stakeholders that the company has been around for three years and is active in regional markets such as St Lucia and Barbados. The ICON President added that natural gas is a “safe, natural fuel” which emits 30-40 per cent less Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency, in brief remarks, told the gathering that he has been encouraging the Guyana Power and Light to seek alternative forms of energy. Guyana Times understands that the National Milling Company of Guyana and the Beharry Group have expressed interest in utilising natural gas as an alternative means of energy use. (Shemuel Fanfair)
Local election candidate Christy Galligan believes there is an urgent need to establish the promised new Independent Garda Authority, so that morale can be returned to the Garda force in Donegal as quickly as possible. Election candidate Christy Galligan has called for morale to be restored within the Gardai.Speaking from the campaign trail this week, Galligan told Donegal Daily, “I know that morale among local members of the force is extremely low at the moment, and it’s a direct result of the recent controversies involving penalty points, whistleblowers, and alleged bugging.“I have been contacted by many of my former colleagues lately and it is clear that morale is on the floor. According to Galligan, the sequence of these controversial events has dealt a major body blow to the morale of the local members of the force in Donegal.Galligan feels while there is a pressing need to instill public confidence in the force once again, we also need to restore trust within the organisation itself.Galligan said, “At the end of the day, serving Garda members need to have full faith in the capacity of the organisation to carry out its duties effectively.“That is why the new Garda Authority, which has been promised by the Government, must be set up as quickly as possible so that members of the force can move on from this difficult saga in the knowledge that effective oversight mechanisms are in place, he added. Galligan has said in the past the importance that the Authority be set up under the ambit of the existing Garda Inspectorate. With existing expertise and manpower there, a move would save hugely on costs and resources.Galligan concluded, “There are many fantastic and enthusiastic members of the force in Donegal who go out to serve the public in what can often be an extremely dangerous and challenging job. Establishing the Garda Authority will go a long way towards boosting morale.GALLIGAN – “WE NEED TO RESTORE MORALE IN GARDAI AFTER CONTROVERSIES was last modified: May 14th, 2014 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Election 2014: Christy GalligannewsPolitics

New Delhi: Communication is key aspect in a team sport but Manu Bhaker believes that remaining “disconnected” with partner Saurabh Chaudhary has been the key to their golden run in four successive World Cups. The teenagers will be gunning for a podium finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics having already booked a quota place for the country. “We are not very connected. We are two very different things (individuals),” the 17-year-old Manu said when asked about her recipe of success having won her fourth mixed World Cup gold in Rio de Janeiro, last week. At 17, one is free from fear of failure which is a common thread binding the teenage duo as they simply like to concentrate on their individual performances. VANCOUVER – A pilot project that allows Vancouver drug users to test substances for the deadly opioid fentanyl is being expanded in an effort to reduce overdose deaths.Vancouver Coastal Health says the pilot project found that clients who found fentanyl in their drugs were 10 times more likely to reduce their dose and, as a result, they were 25 per cent less likely to overdose. The initiative launched at Insite, a supervised injection site, in July 2016 in response to the crisis that has killed hundreds of people in the province. To date, more than 1,400 tests have been conducted. The health authority says 80 per cent of all drugs tested were positive for fentanyl, including 84 per cent of heroin samples and 65 per cent of non-opiate drugs, such as crystal meth, ecstasy and cocaine. The check involves dipping a test strip into a drug sample that has been diluted with a few drops of water, revealing a positive or negative result within seconds. The free drug-checking service will now be available at any of the city’s four overdose prevention sites and the Powell Street Getaway safe injection site.Judy Darcy, B.C.’s minister of mental health and addictions, said the drug test empowers users to make informed decisions about whether or how much they consume.“At the provincial level we are actively looking at how we might roll out such drug checking services more broadly. The information being gathered by Vancouver Coastal Health with this project will be invaluable to this work,” she said in a news release.
WAUSAU, Wis. – Wisconsin ginseng growers are seeking new customers as tariffs in an escalating trade war with China will raise the price by 15 per cent for Chinese consumers.Harvests will begin in the fall but export declines will take a while to measure, the Wausau Daily Herald reported.Wisconsin grows more than 98 per cent of all U.S. ginseng, said Bill Kaldunski, president of the Ginseng Board of Wisconsin. Ginseng exports are an $8-million-per-year industry. The ginseng industry in central Wisconsin is braced for a large impact, said Kaldunski. China is one of the largest consumers of American ginseng.Tariffs went into effect at a time when the industry isn’t making a lot of sales. Most of the ginseng meant to head overseas had already been shipped.“But we’re hearing more now, and buyers are being more aggressive,” Kaldunski said.Ginseng is most commonly taken in tea and is also used as a spice in food. Ginseng products such as beer, extract pills and herbal energy drinks could help growers and distributors like the Wausau-based Hsu Enterprise find new customers in the U.S.“The stereotypical American consumer is not super familiar with ginseng, but probably knows it might be good for them,” said Will Hsu of Hsu Enterprises. “But because they didn’t grow up with the product … they don’t know the benefits.”Hsu said those products are aimed toward people “seeking lifestyle or health changes.”___Information from: Wausau Daily Herald Media, http://www.wausaudailyherald.com
Ahmedabad: Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Tuesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his 2014 promise of “depositing” Rs 15 lakh in the account of every citizen. He was speaking at a rally in Adalaj village of Gandhinagar district, held after the Congress Working Committee meeting. Gandhi also played to the gallery in the business- driven state by claiming that “Gabbar Singh Tax”, his oft- repeated jibe for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was beyond the understanding of traders. Also Read – Squadrons which participated in Balakot air strike awarded citations on IAF Day “Gabbar Singh Tax (GST) can’t be understood by our traders even today (after its was implemented nationwide last year),” he said. “Did people get Rs 15 lakh into their bank accounts as promised by Narendra Modi?” he asked at the well-attended rally. Turning his attention on the Pulwama terror attack and the subsequent air strike by India and the aerial engagement with Pakistan Air Force the next day, Gandhi said it was National Security Adviser Ajit Doval who has sent Jaish-e- Mohammed chief Massod Azhar to freedom in a “special plane”. In the next month’s Lok Sabha polls, truth will win and hatred will be defeated, Gandhi said.
Lahore: Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was released from jail on Wednesday, a day after the Supreme Court granted him six weeks’ bail to receive medical treatment within the country. Sharif, 69, was lodged in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail since December last year, serving a seven-year imprisonment in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills graft case. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo, who denies wrongdoing, has suffered four angina attacks in recent weeks, according to his daughter Maryam Nawaz. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from US On Tuesday, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa accepted Sharif’s appeal and allowed him to get medical treatment from any health facility of his choice within the country. Sharif is barred from leaving Pakistan. The deposed prime minister’s supporters and party workers gathered in large numbers outside the jail and showered his car with flowers as he left the area. Some PML-N party workers moved along with Sharif’s car till his residence. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential polls The three-time prime minister was received by PML-N leaders and his family at his house in the Jati Umra Raiwind area here. Sharif’s release got delayed as the court order and other required documents could not reach the jail for more than 10 hours after the bench’s direction. The Supreme Court observed in its order that several senior doctors had suggested that Sharif’s history of hypertension, cardiac and renal ailments may present a “mild-moderate risk” if he is to undergo angiography. Therefore, granting him relief for a limited period is a “reasonable” request, the top court said. It directed Sharif to deposit two bail bonds worth Rs 5 million Pakistani rupees (USD 35,423) each, receive medical treatment and surrender after six weeks. PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif thanked the court for “meeting the merits of justice”. “We thank the SC for considering gravity of the situation in the light of the medical reports of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif. We also thank the nation and workers of the PMLN whose prayers had made this day possible,” he said. He said that Sharif’s health and well-being is the utmost priority of the party and that would be their primal focus. The Sharif family has been complaining that the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan was not providing adequate treatment to the three-time former premier who has serious health complications. Three corruption cases – Avenfield properties, Flagship investment and Al-Azizia steel mills – were registered against the Sharif family by the anti-graft body in 2017 following a judgment by the Supreme Court that disqualified Sharif in the Panama Papers case in 2017. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Avenfield corruption case in July 2018 which was related to his properties in London. Later he was given bail in September. In December, the accountability court convicted him in the Al-Azizia graft case but acquitted him in the Flagship corruption case. The Al-Azizia Steel Mill case is related to setting up steel mills in Saudi Arabia allegedly with corruption money.
