We’ll find out soon.A Denver-based company called Royalty Exchange will auction royalties from GRAMMY-winning rapper Eminem’s songs released from 1999 to 2013 as part of a deal set up by the production duo the Funky Bass Team, aka FBT Productions. Royalty Shares Of Eminem’s Songs Go Up For Sale royalty-shares-eminems-songs-put-sale Em was signed to FBT before he became a superstar, and now the duo will put portions of future earnings up for bid in October as part of a new company called Royalty Flow. Just as on Wall Street, Royalty Flow will file for its initial public offering on Monday, leaving it up to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to determine its fate. If it’s accepted, anyone with the cash could buy 150 shares or more of Eminem’s catalog at the minimum price of $2,250, according to Rolling Stone. This isn’t the first instance of royalties being sold in this fashion, and auctions like this could lead to a new trend in monetizing musical catalogs. Royalty Exchange has already sold shares of Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown and Ariana Grande songs. But considering Eminem’s proven hits like “My Name Is” and “Lose Yourself” are involved, this auction moves the model into new territory. With this potentially exciting new opportunity for fans and fortune-seekers alike to own a piece of the pie comes a bigger moral question of how intellectual property rights should be dealt with.Inevitably, some will feel there should be a deeper sensitivity considering the expressive nature of the commodity involved, while others see this as the latest iteration of the industry’s ever-changing monetization models. Time will tell.Read More: 5 Reasons “The Eminem Show” Is A Classic Album Twitter Facebook last_img read more

That’s an increase of more than 10 percent from the year before. Apple highlighted several of its US-made components, including touch-sensitive glass for iPhone and iPad models made by Corning in Kentucky, as well as wireless communication hardware made in Colorado, Massachusetts and Oregon. Apple said the total number of jobs it’s created or supported since 2011 has tripled “from almost 600,000 to 2 million across all 50 states.” However, it’s not always easy to be “assembled in the USA.” In 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the company was moving some Mac production to the US. But when Apple started assembling the $3,000 Mac Pro in Texas, it reportedly ran into problems. Apple struggled to find US suppliers that could make enough screws for the Mac Pro, according to a report Monday from The New York Times. It was one of several problems that delayed sales of the Mac, according to the Times, and Apple ended up ordering screws from China. When reached for comment, an Apple spokeswoman pointed back to the company’s Monday post.  Apple iPhone XS Best Buy Post a comment Preview • iPhone XS is the new $1,000 iPhone X 0 Mentioned Above Apple iPhone XS (64GB, space gray) Sep 1 • iPhone 11, Apple Watch 5 and more: The final rumors Aug 31 • Your phone screen is gross. NASA citizen scientist discovers first ancient dead star with peculiar rings

by ,

first_img Comment Share your voice Sci-Tech Today’s NASA Mars weather report: It’s freakin’ cold Trump’s Space Force is coming, but not as originally planned Yes, this is a real view of the ISS transiting the moon 17 Photos Tags Intriguingly, the fate of this planetary system may foreshadow what’s to come for the Earth. Eventually, our sun will expand into a “red giant,” swallowing Mercury and Venus (maybe even Earth) whole like The Blob rolling across small-town America. That event would tidy up the inner solar system like a cosmic Marie Kondo, and then see the star collapse into a white dwarf, its gravity dissipate and the planets at the edge of the system drift away.NASA and collaborating science and educational institutions launched Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 in February 2017 as a citizen scientist project that uses data from WISE to search for the supposed planet hiding at the edge of our solar system. Over 150,000 participants eyeball thousands of images generated by WISE to look for any anomalies that might pop up. The project has already reaped many rewards, with a brown dwarf, a type of “failed star,” discovered only six days after the project began and over a thousand similar objects discovered since. center_img More from space NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center/Scott Wiessinger A citizen scientist working with NASA has detected an old, cold dying star that may provide a window into the fate of our own solar system billions of years from now.Melina Thévenot, a citizen scientist from Germany, detected an anomaly while searching through data collected by the European Space Agency’s Gaia spacecraft. At first, she believed it was bad data, but when she looked at the source in the images from NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission, she decided the data might be valuable and handed it over to the team working on the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen scientist project. The leads on that project decided to follow up on the finding, re-positioning the Keck II telescope in Hawaii to take a deeper look. With their new set of eyes focused on the tiny spot in the sky, Keck II confirmed the blip wasn’t bad data — it was the oldest, coldest white dwarf we’ve ever spotted — and it is circled by a peculiar set of dusty rings. The discovery appears Tuesday in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.  “This white dwarf is so old that whatever process is feeding material into its rings must operate on billion-year timescales,” said John Debes, an astronomer and lead author on the study. “This star is really challenging our assumptions of how planetary systems evolve.” Dubbed J0207 (or LSPM J0207+3331 for the purists), the newly discovered dead star is about the size of the Earth and located around 145 light-years from our home planet. The team believes the dead star has two disks of dusty material, the first known white dwarf to host such a weird phenomenon. Generally, dusty disks form around these bodies when asteroids or comets are flung into the gravitational pull of a the star. As they approach, the dead star’s gravity begins to tear them apart, breaking them up into pieces that constantly orbit the body. Weirdly, white dwarfs this old generally don’t maintain their dusty disks — all the material slowly falls into the star. That’s puzzled researchers, but follow-up missions may resolve the conundrum.”What makes this new white dwarf so interesting is that it’s much older than the typical dusty white dwarf,” said Debes. “That is hard to explain with our current models of how asteroids get kicked into inner white dwarf systems, but somehow Nature knows how to do it.”    1 NASA NASA Opportunity rover witnessed the wild side of Marslast_img read more

Indias First Maruti 800 Car Lying Unused for Over 1 Year

by ,

first_imgThe first Maruti 800 car which was symbolically handed to a Delhi couple by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1983 is lying in a rusted state at its owners’ residence for more than a year now.It was almost 32 years ago that Harpal Singh won the allotment for the car in a lucky draw; the keys to the car were handed to him by Indira Gandhi on 14 December, 1983. Singh received the keys in the presence of Rajiv Gandhi, who was then working with Indian Airlines in New Delhi, where Singh was employed. “He (Rajiv Gandhi) knew my father-in-law as they both worked in Indian Airlines. The moment it was announced through the lottery that he will get the first car, Rajivji jumped with excitement and hugged him,” said Singh’s elder son-in-law Tejinder Ahluwalia, recalling that nostalgic moment. Though it gave its owner a celebrity status in Delhi during the car’s heydays, it is today languishing in the couple’s Green Park’s residence in Delhi, because Singh and his wife Gulshanbeer Kaur died a few years ago.Singh passed away in 2010 and his wife Kaur died two years later. After their death, the family members drove the car for about a couple of years but only within the locality, according to Hindustan Times report.”Even after mom’s death, the family members used to go to the house to start the car and take a short drive in the inner colony lane, but for the past one-and-half years it has not been used at all,” Singh’s elder son-in-law Tejinder Ahluwalia said.Singh’s other younger son-in-law Amardeep Walia said that the car is in fully functional condition but will become defunct if it lies unused for long. He said that Maruti must take it back and preserve it with immense care, considering its significance. “The car is still not in a very bad condition, it needs some cosmetic repair and it will start running. But if it is kept idle it might become defunct, its makers should save this car as it is not just any other vehicle but a symbol that how the first car made by them stood the test of the time,” Walia said.Maruti Suzuki had borrowed the car from Singh in 2008 to celebrate the completion of 25 years Maruti Suzuki, but did not show any interest thereafter, despite the family’s request. “After that it has shown no interest towards its first baby. We even wrote letters around a couple of years back to the company to do something to save this piece of history but they have not shown any interest,” Ahluwalia said.Maruti’s spokesperson has said that the company is willing to talk to the family if they want to sell back to them.”It is indeed very special, as it was our first customer car. Mr. Harpal Singh had maintained it with great care. If the family now wants us to buy it back, we are open to discuss with them,” the spokesperson said.last_img read more

CSK vs KKR Dream 11 and MPL Fantasy tips live stream preview

by ,

first_imgIt is the blockbuster clash, the top of the table duel that has everyone excited, Chennai Super Kings take on Kolkata Knight Riders. Both the teams have dominated, and yet both sides are inherently flawed. Despite the drubbing handed to Kings XI Punjab, CSK coach Stephen Fleming conceded that there are flaws in his side that they have to try hard to hide.Dinesh Karthik has one Andre Russell up his sleeve, look away from him and there are problems galore. The middle order keeps getting stuck and the pace bowling contingent is not sharp. Yes, Harry Gurney looked good in his first IPL outing, but the Indian contingent has to be sharper.Predicted XI for both the sides: File photo of KKR captain Dinesh Karthik.IANSCSK Probable XI: Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c, wk), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Scott Kuggeleijn, Harbhajan Singh, Imran TahirKKR Probable XI: Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c, wk), Shubman Gill, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Kuldeep Yadav, Harry Gurney, Prasidh KrishnaFantasy tips and suggestions:Wicket-keeper: The toss up is between two skippers, both of whom will bat in the middle order, both of whom are in good form. However, Karthik can walk out to bat at number 4 too, which means he will have more balls to face and solely for this reason, he should be picked over MS Dhoni. Batsmen: Chris Lynn has found his groove, and has started to warm up to proceedings. 93 runs in the last two matches at a strike rate of 147 bodes well for KKR and hence, he is an automatic pick ahead of Shane Watson, who has slipped below the radar so far this season. This season, he has scored 88 runs in 5 matches so far at a strike rate of 111.39 which is his second lowest in a season after 91.02 in 2017.Suresh Raina and Robin Uthappa both get in as both are consistent performers for their side. Nitish Rana, who has been a rock for KKR gets in ahead of Ambati Rayudu, who has struggled to get going and could well be playing for his spot in this match.  Andre RussellIPLAll-rounders: Andre Russell, the beast, will absolutely stroll in the playing XI and while we are amazed with his power, we have forgotten about his pedigree with the ball. He bowls in the death and more often than not, gets the job done for his side. For CSK, Ravindra Jadeja has been decent with the ball, but leaves a lot to be desired with the bat and now needs to take up more responsibility with the bat.Bowlers: Deepak Chahar showed he can handle pressure in the death overs and hence, Dhoni could use his overs in back end too. Also, Harry Gurney, after his man of the match performance against Rajasthan Royals, becomes an automatic attack.Imran Tahir pips Kuldeep Yadav as the spinner as his numbers are better. His economy rate is 5.39 as compared to Yadav’s economy of 8.61.Also, Harbhajan Singh should get the nod ahead of Sunil Narine, primarily because of his control and wickets.last_img read more

Team India angry with Ricky Ponting IPL coaches under scanner ahead of

by ,

first_imgWith the IPL coming to a close, all the focus will now shift to the World Cup. As such, there are growing concerns with the involvement of overseas coaches as it could lead to plenty of know-how about several of the marquee Indian players. For instance, Ricky Ponting, who is the coach of the Delhi Capitals, will also be the assistant coach for Australia and hence, there are concerns over him nullifying the Shikhar Dhawan impact.”Imagine the extent to which they understand Dhawan the cricket. What clicks for him… what doesn’t… It’s clearly unhealthy. Rishabh, Prithvi, Shreyas – see the amount of analysis they’re being able to gather,” Times of India quoted Team India’s take on the matter.South Africa’s Chennai-based analyst Prasanna Agoram is with KXIP KL Rahul, Shikhar DhawanReutersAlso, Cricket South Africa’s Chennai-based analyst Prasanna Agoram, who has been with the South African team for a very long time is working with the Kings XI Punjab and hence, will know all about KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami, two of India’s critical players in the World Cup.”The amount of work Prasanna has put in with the South African national team is tremendous. We got to know about it first hand when we visited South Africa last year. Now, this guy gets to spend two months right here in the Indian domestic circuit just weeks before he’ll accompany South Africa to the World Cup. This just doesn’t sound correct,” some members of the Indian cricket team had to say.As per a TOI report, there are concerns with the involvement of overseas coaches and analysts with the Indian team, that too so close to a World event where strategies and tactics will be very crucial. It adds that although the IPL is a free market, a line has to be drawn. Former Australia skipper Ricky PontingReutersAlso, it states that a number of junior cricketers have expressed surprise over the fact that while Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, and VVS Laxman have been slapped with a conflict of interest notice, the likes of Ricky Ponting, who are directly involved with the Australian national team continue to get a free hand.”If players like Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman are not associated with IPL, whose loss is it? Look at Pravin Amre. He’s one of India’s finest batting coaches. Just because he wants to keep his IPL job, he can’t work with any other state team or NCA. But Tom Moody can coach Sunrisers and head the Caribbean Premier League too,” the players added.last_img read more

Beatendown BSE 500 stocks return decent gains in 3 days

by ,

first_imgAbout 95 percent of the BSE 500 companies have given decent returns to the investors in the past three days, as the benchmark indices have witnessed massive gains following the announcement of some positive measures in the budget for 2016-2017.While the BSE Sensex gained over 1,500 points in the last three trading sessions ending March 3, the 50-share Nifty went up by 488 points. The rally in the indices was mainly led by the rising hopes on a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the wake of the government’s status quo on fiscal consolidation. Presenting his third budget on Monday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had kept the fiscal deficit target for the next fiscal year unchanged at 3.5 percent, sharply in contrast with the call by bankers and analysts that the finance minister would deviate from the fiscal discipline path to accommodate for higher government spending. The announcement triggered heavy buying in most banking stocks, which were beaten down in the previous sessions over a sharp decline in profits for the December quarter due to higher provisioning for bad loans.Stocks in the BSE 500 index also saw huge gains, with some of them giving more than 25 percent returns in just three days after the budget presentation.Share price of Suven Life Sciences posted the biggest gains among the BSE 500 stocks, climbing by over 33 percent in the first three trading sessions in March. While Inox Wind was the second best performer in the index, gaining a little over 30 percent, stock prices of Delta Corp, Marksans Pharma and Hathway Cable & Datacom went up by 27 percent each. In contrast, 25 of the BSE 500 components witnessed losses in the past three sessions, with United Spirits figuring among the list. United Spirits shares fell over six percent.”The probability of the GST Bill getting passed in the current session of Parliament looks low and markets will now look out for reforms on the executive side,” Dipen Shah, senior vice-president and head of private client group research, Kotak Securities, told the Financial Express.last_img read more

Nanda Devi Bodies of missing climbers spotted near peak in Uttarakhand

first_imgThe bodies were sighted after an air search was conducted over the Nanda Devi East peak.TwitterThe Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters searching for eight climbers including seven foreigners missing on India’s second-highest peak, the Nanda Devi East, have spotted bodies and equipment of five mountaineers in Uttarakhand on Monday, June 3.The climbers from the UK, US and Australia went missing en route to the Nanda Devi East peak. The members of the team were Martin Moran, John McLaren, Richard Payne, Rupert Havel (all from the UK), Ruth Macrain (Australia), Anthony Sudecam (US), Rachel Bimmel (US) and liaison officer Chetan Pandey.Bodies of five climbers were sighted near an unscaled peak adjoining the Nanda Devi East peak during an air search by Air Force helicopters on Monday, Pithoragarh District Magistrate VK Jogdande said.Apparently, the mountaineers perished in an avalanche while ascending an unscaled peak near the Nanda Devi East peak after they failed to scale the latter, he said. The bodies were sighted after an air search was conducted over the peak on the basis of clues provided by four climbers from the UK rescued during a sortie undertaken on Sunday.”We are sending a report to the Centre. Further, the rescue operation will be conducted after we get instructions,” the District Magistrate said.”We have an expert team from State Disaster Response Force, besides experts from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. In addition to these teams we have stationed our search teams at Laspa and Bugdiyar camps close to the Nanda Devi base camp in Munsiyari,” said the official.Sub Divisional Magistrate of Munsiyari KN Goswami said, “It is now ITBP and SDRF and Air Force teams that will conduct the search operation with help of expert mountaineers and local villagers.”Led by well-known British mountaineer Martin Moran, the team went missing recently on way to the 7434-metre-high Nanda Devi East peak in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district.A liaison officer of Indian Mountaineering Foundation in New Delhi was also part of the team. They had left Munsiyari on May 13 to scale the peak but did not return to the base camp on the appointed date of May 25.British mountaineer Martin Moran had scaled the peak twice in the past, he said. The route to the peak begins from Munsiyari about 132 km from the district headquarters.(Inputs from agencies)last_img read more

Anushka Sharma opens up about her pregnancy reports Do I need to

by ,

first_imgVirat Kohli and Anushka SharmaInstagramReports of Anushka Sharma’s pregnancy keep surfacing on social media and the speculations have followed her whenever she was seen wearing loose clothes or for staying away from films. Anushka hasn’t paid any heed to such rumours but it irks her when she needs to clarify the reports.”What irks me is the clarification part. Do I need to clarify? Nahi! But then that’s how it is. Any actress, who gets married… sabke baare mein they’ve said something. Someone could be wearing clothes that are loose. That’s because they’re trendy. But they’re said to be pregnant. It’s like a monkey on your back. You can’t do anything about it. You just ignore it,” Anushka Sharma told Filmfare in an inteview. When Anushka was asked if the rumours of her pregnacy keep filmmakers away from her, she said, “I’m fortunate this has not happened. It could happen. An actress gets married and the next thing they talk about it is, ‘Is she pregnant?’ When she’s dating it’s like, ‘Shaadi karne wale hai ki nahi?’ It’s crude. You should allow people to live their life. What’s the need to jump the gun? Then put someone in a position where they end up clarifying unnecessarily.”Anushka has not signed anything new post-Zero. But if you ask her about it, she says that it was a conscious decision as she wanted to take a couple of months off after Zero.Meanwhile, Anushka and husband Virat Kohli have flown to Miami with the Indian Cricket Team and a few pictures of them have surfaced online. Can lenders to Jet afford to accept employees proposal to revive the

by ,

first_imgWorkers cover the cockpit window of a Jet Airways aircraft parked at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, on March 26.ReutersA consortium of employees of beleaguered Jet Airways faces an uphill task in its attempt for a role in the airline’s debt rescue plan that the lenders are trying to implement. The employees including some pilots, senior engineers and others claim that they can mobilize up to Rs 3,000 crore to keep the airline afloat. The lenders’ consortium headed by the State Bank of India (SBI) is awaiting financial bids from the four prospective investors who submitted their expressions of interest (EoI) before the deadline earlier this month. They have time until May 10 to come up with viable binding financial bids individually or in partnership with one or the other bidders. United Arab Emirates (UAE) national carrier Etihad Airways, which is the strategic partner of Jet Airways, is the only airline among the bidders. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier already owns 24 per cent stake in Jet and the rescue plan envisages the airline increasing this stake. There are two US-based private equity firms, TPG Capital and Indigo Partners, among the bidders trying their luck in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. Of them, Indigo Partners already has major stakes in two airlines in the Americas. The fourth bidder is the state-owned investment promotion entity, the National Investment, and Industry Fund (NIIF), which has little exposure to the aviation industry. In July 2017, Jet Airways had asked its junior pilots, who joined the brand in 2016, to take a 30 percent pay cut or leave. ReutersThe Jet employees’ group has approached the SBI Capital Markets Ltd, which is overseeing the implementation of the debt rescue plan but is yet to get a response. Industry sources, however, think the more viable route for the employees would have been to tie up with one of the bidders had already submitted their EoI before the deadline. The primary concern of the lenders, who are desperate to recover at least a part of their loans to the ailing airline, will be the financial viability of any proposal. The lenders control 50.1 per cent stake in the airline after the debt-equity swap and are offering up to 75 per cent stake to prospective investors. Airline founder Naresh Goyal’s share is now about 21 per cent, which may finally be reduced to 9 per cent, according to some reports. The prospective investors have hit the lenders with suggestions that they accept up to 80 per cent haircut to ensure the financial viability of the resurrected airline. The Jet Airways share fell further on Tuesday in early trade, plummeting to around Rs 150 after opening the day at Rs 162.70. The share that closed last month at Rs 268, has steadily fallen as the drama has unfolded. It opened the year at Rs 280.last_img read more

Dhaka quarantined people panicked

by ,

first_imgThe capital city Dhaka has virtually been isolated from the rest of the country as a make-shift court is set to announce verdict in a graft case against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia today. The situation prevaling in the Dhaka city is similar to the one seen on a day of hartal when people hardly come to the streets fearing violence.People in all over the country have been apparently panicked by the additional security measures taken by the government ahead of delivery of the judgement in Zia Orphanage Trust case. The BNP claimed that more than 3,500 leaders and activists of the opposition camp have already been detained in the past nine days or so.The members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have been continuing searches at every entry point of the capital as well as at different places inside the city. The government has already deployed 10,000 police men and 20 platoons Barder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel in Dhaka. The city looks lean.Political analysts say if a three-time prime minister, Khaleda Zia, has been convicted, it will bring no good to the country’s politics. This is for the first time in the Bangladesh history, a former prime minister is likely to be convicted.Analysts also say the verdict may leave long-term effects on the overall politics, especially the next general electionsBNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, “BNP didn’t declare any programme. But, the government has created unstable situation deploying its party men, as well as memebrs of police, RAB and BGB.”The police, however, defended the security measures, saying they are prepared to ensure peace and security for the people and to tackle any subversive activities carried out by BNP men after the verdict.Home ministry Asaduzzaman Khan told Prothom Alo on Wednesday that the preparation has been taken to tackle any law and order situation.”The measures are taken based on concrete information,” he claimed.A total of 69 platoons BGB were deployed across the country till Wednesday and 65 platoons more had been kept ready, according to the ministry.Asked about ruling party Awami League’s preparation over the verdict, AL presidium member Faruk Khan said this is responsibility of a sincere government.Referring to the government claims, Supreme Court lawyer Shahdeen Malik told Prothom Alo that such huge deployment hampers public movement, rallies, freedom of speech and daily activities. “Such steps are contrary to fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution.”He maintained that keeping the entire capital under a virtual siege in the name of security is tantamount to violation of public rights.last_img read more

Photo: AFPA young man died Friday after he was injured in violence as looting broke out in impoverished Venezuelan cities, an official said, bringing the toll from unrest in more than a month of anti-government protests to at least 36.Hecder Lugo Perez, 22, died after he was hit in the head by a projectile in the northwestern city of Valencia, sources at the Valles de San Diego medical clinic said. City Mayor Enzo Scarano confirmed his death.Mass protests erupted on April 1 by demonstrators demanding elections to remove President Nicolas Maduro. They blame him for an economic crisis that has caused shortages of food, medicine and other basics.Anger boiled over Friday in the western municipality of Rosario de Perija, where young protesters burned, pulled down and then smashed a statue of former president Hugo Chavez, Maduro’s late predecessor and mentor, according to video posted on social media showing the incident in a public square.Looting broke out this week in cities such as Valencia, which looked like a disaster zone with bars on shop windows bent and windows broken.“There was a crowd of them. They broke through the walls and took everything. They destroyed everything” before police came and fired tear gas to disperse the looters, said Nuvia Torrealba, 42, who worked in a bakery.“My bosses have lost their home and we are out of a job. It was horrible.”Residents were stockpiling food, water and fuel. At least 70 stores have been raided since Tuesday, the Valencia chamber of commerce said.“They are taking advantage of the protests to go out and rob,” said Magaly Oliveros, a 64-year-old housewife in Valencia.“Today we are hungry, and tomorrow we will be hungrier still because there is nothing.”Army allegationsMaduro is resisting opposition demands for elections. Each side accuses the other of using armed groups to sow violence in the demonstrations.Maduro has the public backing of the military high command, which analysts say is key to resisting the protests. However, senior opposition leader Henrique Capriles said on Friday that 85 mid-ranking army officers have been detained for opposing moves to crack down on protesters. He cited information he said was given by the officers’ families.Weekend protestsMaduro’s opponents called for women to march on Saturday dressed in white, a traditional show of defiance against what they brand a repressive government.“The regime is falling,” said Lilian Tintori, wife of jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, outside the prison near Caracas where she was demanding to see her husband.“It has no strength and is showing its worst side, using weapons because it is does not have right on its side.”The president has launched moves to reform the constitution, further angering the opposition, which says he is trying to dodge elections. He says the economic crisis is a US-backed conspiracy to topple him and install a right-wing government.“We will not let a fascist regime be set up here,” said Elias Jaua, the official appointed to lead a presidential commission on the constitutional reforms.Capriles said the opposition will take no part in the constitutional discussions. The celebrity Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, added his voice to calls for an end to the violence on Thursday. He called for Maduro to “listen to the voice of the Venezuelan people”, in a message posted on Facebook.last_img read more

Diagnosis and Treatment of Congenital Heart Defects

by ,

first_imgIn ChildrenSevere heart disease generally becomes evident during the first few months after birth. Some babies are blue or have very low blood pressure shortly after birth. Other defects cause breathing difficulties, feeding problems, or poor weight gain.Minor defects are most often diagnosed on a routine medical check-up. Minor defects rarely cause symptoms. While most heart murmurs in children are normal, some may be due to defects. If the heart problem is significant, the child’s pediatrician will likely refer the child to a pediatric cardiologist. Pediatric cardiologists are trained to diagnose and treat heart problems in infants, children, and young adults. They have the training and equipment to find out what tests and treatments the child will need, and how often the child will need heart checkups in the future. In AdultsFor pregnant women, the American Heart Association recommends maintaining a healthy pregnancy weight, monitoring and measuring diabetes, and taking prescribed prenatal vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid. For adults who believe they may have a heart defect, it is important to visit a cardiologists who can evaluate their medical history and perform a physical exam. Physicians may also order an electrocardiogram (called an EKG or ECG), chest X-ray, or an echocardiogram (ultrasound movie of the heart). A ventricular septal defect can lead to heart failure, high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension), infection of the heart (endocarditis), irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), and delayed growth. Small holes may heal on their own or cause no symptoms. Larger holes may require surgery to stitch the hole closed or to cover the hole with a patch. For more information about congenital heart defects, visit the American Heart Association website at www.heart.orglast_img read more

Freshman Delegate Charles Preps for Challenges Ahead

by ,

first_imgBy James Wright, Special to the AFRO, jwright@afro.comNick Charles is one of Prince George’s County’s newest elected officials. He cannot wait to go to Annapolis as a delegate in January.Charles got 8,330 votes, enough to have him win one of the three seats for the 25th Legislative District, located in central Prince George’s County.Nick Charles is an U.S. Air Force veteran and community association president.  (Courtesy Photo)“I grew up in District 25,” Charles told the AFRO. “I am a graduate of Largo High School and I have served as president of the Forest Spring Community Association. I know what my community needs and I am excited about doing things for the community.”Charles won the Democratic Party primary on June 26, along with slate mates former Delegate Melony Griffith, who is set to be the next senator for District 25 and incumbents Dereck Davis and Darryl Barnes. Even though Charles will be a freshman, he will be in good company because Barnes is the chairman of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus, Davis is the chairman of the powerful Economic Matters Committee, and Griffith has served as the chairman of the Prince George’s County House Delegation and knows her way around the capitol.Charles is a graduate of the University of the District of Columbia and has extensive military experience in the U.S. Air Force. He works as a consultant providing acquisition and program management oversight for U.S. Navy projects. Charles also owns a business, Charles Management Consulting Group.During his first legislative session, Charles wants to sponsor a bill to make it easier for small businesses, many of them minority owned, to get access to state government contracts. “I want to change the procurement process,” he said.Charles noted that in Maryland, there are processes and procedures to get contracts at the state, county, and municipality levels and they all have different requirements. “It takes too much time for a small business owner to focus on meeting the requirements for all of those levels and agencies,” he said. He wants to set up a clearinghouse where small businesses can apply for contracts on those levels of government at one time and make it easier to win a contract that way.Charles wants to sponsor legislation changing the way real property is valued in District 25 and those other jurisdictions that have similar demographic issues. “Inner-Beltway communities have the lowest valuation of property in the county and that needs to change,” he said. “Decisions on where to build shopping centers and restaurants and where to locate businesses and government agencies are made largely on property valuation. I want to make it fair for Prince Georgians so we won’t be constantly undervalued.”Charles understands he has an experienced legislative team by his side in Annapolis. Still, he knows a good reputation is the key to effectiveness. “If you have a bad reputation among your colleagues in the House, it will be hard for you to get things done,” he said. “You will be known as a stale legislator even if you are popular back in the district and that’s not good.”last_img read more
