Dang the rules for naming Jupiters new moons are super strict

by ,

first_img Hey @JupiterLunacy, you should name the newly discovered moon S/2018 J1 Pheraea. Pheraea was involved with Zeus, and their daughter was found and saved by a shepherd, or should I say Sheppard.  #NameJupitersMoons— Carnegie Science (@carnegiescience) February 21, 2019 13 Photos Post a comment But wait. There’s more. Each individual moon has more specific needs. Three of the moons are retrograde (they orbit in an opposite direction to Jupiter’s rotation) and must have names ending in “e,” while the other two must end in “a.”Carnegie wants the public to offers suggestions on Twitter by tweeting to @JupiterLunacy with the hashtag #NameJupitersMoons. Some of the suggestions so far don’t fit the brief, but one viable idea comes from Carnegie Science itself: Pheraea, one of Zeus’ lovers. I was ready to suggest Persephone, but there’s already an asteroid with that name. NASA view of Jupiter looks like an infamous South Park character NASA captures cosmic ‘dolphin’ swimming in Jupiter’s clouds Space Sci-Tech 0center_img Share your voice While the rules seem strict, there are some good reasons for them. The International Astronomical Union, which governs the names of space objects, already has a stringent list of requirements. The moon rules will also keep the new names on theme for Jupiter. Jupiter has 79 known moons, including famous satellites Europa and Io and the likes of Adrastea (Zeus’s foster mom) and Callisto (one of Zeus’s lovers).     We’re lucky there are so many characters in Roman and Greek mythology. As it turns out, sometimes a good name is hard to find. Jupiter swirls Tags Jaw-dropping Jupiter: NASA’s Juno mission eyes the gas giant Jupiter as seen by Hubble. Space Telescope Science Institute Polyphonte, this may be your time to shine. The Carnegie Institution for Science put out a call Thursday asking for the public’s help naming some recently discovered moons found orbiting Jupiter. But don’t get carried away. There are rules. Carnegie announced the 12 moons in mid-2018, and we get a say in draping monikers on five of them. Some of the ground rules are pretty straightforward: 16 characters or less, nothing offensive, nothing too similar to existing moon or asteroid names. You also can’t name them after a living person. Now the tunnel starts to narrow. The moons must be named after characters in Roman or Greek mythology who were either descendants of or lovers of Jupiter (Roman) or Zeus (Greek).  OK, maybe we can still work with that, even though that rules out calling any of them Elon, Moony McMoonFace or Buzz. last_img read more

Mark Zuckerberg confident Facebook is prepared for 2020 election

by ,

first_img Tags The Facebook chief used the interview to push back against the idea that his company should determine what constitutes political speech. He’s previously called for more government regulation around political speech and advertising. “I think setting the rules around political advertising is not a company’s job,” he told host George Stephanopoulos. “There have been plenty of rules in the past. It’s just at this point they’re not updated to the modern threats that we face. We need new rules.”The topic has been on the minds of Facebook’s leadership and of social media watchers in recent days. Over the weekend, The Washington Post published a Zuckerberg op-ed that urged government officials to take a more active role in setting standards for the handling of election-related content, both legitimate and ill-intentioned. Meanwhile, lawmakers like Sen. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, have said that big platforms like Facebook should be subject to levels of regulation that match their size and influence. Facebook has more than 2 billion users worldwide.Existing laws, he said, primarily focus on a candidate and the election. “But that’s not primarily what we saw Russia trying to do,” Zuckerberg said. “What we saw them doing was talking about divisive political issues. The goal … was just to rile people up and be divisive.”Zuckerberg also warned that other countries would likely try to interfere in the election.”Well, what I can guarantee is that they’re definitely going to try,” he said. “Our job is to make the defenses stronger and stronger, to make it harder for them to do what they’re doing.”Other scandalsFacebook’s controversies are about more than just politics. On Wednesday, security researchers from UpGuard found that Facebook data containing more than 540 million records was posted in a public database on Amazon cloud servers. When asked about the findings from the security researchers, Zuckerberg said the company was still looking into the issue. “In general, we work with developers to make sure that they’re respecting people’s information and using it in only ways that they want,” he said.Facebook also drew criticism over the use of its livestreaming service during a terrorist attack in New Zealand that killed 50 Muslims at two mosques. Zuckerberg suggested that delaying livestreams might have consequences for users who don’t stream violent content.  “It would also fundamentally break what livestreaming is for people,” he said. “Most people are livestreaming, you know, a birthday party or hanging out with friends when they can’t be together.”Facebook declined to comment beyond what Zuckerberg said during the broadcast.Originally published April 4, 7:27 a.m. PT.Updates, 7:57 a.m.: Adds background information and more details from the interview; 12:41 p.m.: Includes more details from the interview. In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday, Zuckerberg said he’s “confident” his company is ready to combat any election interference in the upcoming campaign season.Facebook has strengthened its safeguards, requiring advertisers to verify their identities if they run political ads. It’s also rolled out a searchable database showing who paid for advertising and what audience it reached.”The systems, overall, have just gotten quite robust,” Zuckerberg said. “I think we, at this point, have probably some of the most-advanced systems of any company or government in the world for preventing the kind of tactics that Russia and now other countries as well have tried.”The changes haven’t been without issues; businesses have complained that their commercial ads have been misclassified, and media outlets have found loopholes that can be exploited. Brain Break Watch This Kids Virtual Reality Wipeout

by ,

first_img Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. As if strapping a virtual reality headset to your face isn’t dorky enough, it could have you falling flat on your face, too.  At least that’s what happened to this poor kid. She gave a fancy $799 pair of HTC Vive VR goggles a spin, pawed her way around like a lost mole in the dark, and — whoops-a-daisy — she biffed. Hard.Related: Brain Break: (Literally!) Hero Saves Boy From Flying Bat at Pirates GameLucky girl, someone posted the footage of her eating it on Imgur. A day later the funny clip made the rounds on Reddit, where a kind soul begged the critical question: “OUCH! Is the Vive okay?!?!” Thanks to the little human cushion, it appears to be. But we’re not so sure about the kid. She got a wicked harsh taste of reality — also known as the floor. 1 min read March 11, 2016center_img Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Register Now »last_img read more

Californias tough net neutrality bill passes state assembly vote

by ,

first_imgThis week California’s net neutrality bill passed through the California State Assembly. The bill went through on a vote of 61-18 – it will now move on to the senate (again), where a vote will likely happen next week. California’s net neutrality bill is one of a number of state level responses to the FCC’s decision to repeal the existing legislation (Washington and Oregon are the only 2 states to have passed full net neutrality bills). It’s believed to be the toughest net neutrality bill in the U.S. This is because as well as preventing ISPs from throttling traffic, and stopping them from charging websites for special access to internet users, it also bans “zero rating” on certain apps (which is where using certain apps won’t count against a user’s data usage). Miguel Santiago, (D-Los Angeles) said, when presenting the bill, that ““The Trump administration destroyed the internet as we know it, plain and simple… We have an opportunity in California to lead this nation by voting yes for this bill.” However, there was some criticism of the bill from Republicans. For example, Jim Paterson, Republican Assemblymember for Fresno, argued that the argument needs to be resolved at a federal level. “The worst possible thing we can do is have created 50 different state FCCs.” The EFF responds to California net neutrality vote As you might expect, the EFF – the Electronic Frontier Foundation – was jubilant at the result. “You did it” exclaimed the title of a blog post published on the organization’s website on Thursday. “ISPs have tried hard to gut and kill this bill, pouring money and robocalls into California. There was a moment where that campaign looked like it might have been successful, but you spoke out and got strong net neutrality protections restored. But that hiccup means that, although a version of the bill already passed in the California Senate, it’s now different enough from that initial version to have to be re-voted on.” The EFF urged people in California to “contact your California state senator and tell them to vote yes.” “California can prove that ISP money can’t defeat real people’s voices.” Find out more about what you can do to support the net neutrality bill in California here. So much for dialogue and consensus Legislative Assembly snubs President Solís 100day

by ,

first_imgPresident Luis Guillermo Solís probably didn’t expect a “Kumbaya” moment at the Legislative Assembly when he requested an audience with lawmakers to present his administration’s much-anticipated100-day report, but he thought they’d at least let him show up to the campfire. On Monday evening, hours after the president requested an hour Thursday afternoon to present his assessment of the government as he found it after President Laura Chinchilla (2010-2014) left office in May, the heads of the fractious political parties refused to give him the floor. Solís blamed the National Liberation Party (PLN) for the delay in the report, which would be a first of its kind in Costa Rica.“This is not an attempt to generate arbitrary judgments — that belongs to other government bodies — but an opportunity to speak frankly, with respect, and deeply about [the fact that] today the decision-making process of the Costa Rican government has become dysfunctional and to highlight the poor practices that have taken root in public administration,” Solís said during a press conference on Tuesday.“This country needs political dialogue. It was a good-faith attempt to propose it,” he added. The president said that his team could not wait any longer to present the report, which would help guide the direction of his government’s public policy, including the upcoming National Development Plan, expected in November. Solís said the report would be presented to the public, including social and business leaders, as well as any lawmakers who choose to attend on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Teatro Melico Salazar at 7 p.m.While Solís has struggled to work through his government’s differences with his own Citizen Action Party in the legislature, he reserved his harshest criticisms for the PLN, which controlled the presidency from 2006 to 2014.“I get the impression that there is concern in the National Liberation Party over what this report says; second, that this report could set a precedent to review the state of the government … ; third, I see in National Liberation that they don’t what to support the normal, natural management of the government,” the president said, pausing to choose his words.PLN lawmaker Juan Luis Jiménez released a statement Tuesday saying that there was still a chance for the president to present the 100-day report at the Assembly, but that he would have to respond to questions from lawmakers.Casa Presidencial has not commented on the possibility of presenting the report to the legislature again. In This Issue   Gold flipflops all day   I

by ,

first_imgIn This Issue. *  Gold flip-flops all day. *  It’s all about the Debt Ceiling. *  ESM issues a bond! *  Switching to the so-called Safe Havens. And, Now, Today’s Pfennig For Your Thoughts! Money For Nothing Good day.  And a Marvelous Monday to you! The autumn chill returned to our area this past weekend, football weather is here, time for a bonfire and flannels! My beloved Cardinals are in deep dookie and are in danger of being blown out of the playoffs in the first round! UGH! But the rest of the weekend, sports wise was good, so I’ve got that going for me! It’s day 7 on the partial shutdown (PS), and the autumn chill that has returned to the Midwest, is also making things frigid in Washington D.C. as more and more warnings are being shouted from the rooftops that the U.S. could default and the results would be catastrophic. I say, well, if someone would have stopped to think about where all the deficit spending was getting us while it was going on for the past decade, that maybe, just maybe, we would not be having to wring our hands in fear of a default right now!  Hey! You can’t blame me! For I have been warning anyone that would listen to me for so long, that when I began warning about the deficit spending, I used to be mistaken for a young Bruce Willis! HA! The bond market doesn’t seem to be worried though. They know, just like me, that in the end, we won’t default, and the debt ceiling can will get kicked down the road once again. And ever since the initial move in the dollar (down), the currencies have been in a very tight trading range. The bias to sell dollars remains, but no one is paying attention to it right now. So, what I think we have here is the bond and currency markets waiting for the next shoe to drop. That shoe could be the next time the Fed Heads meet, and announce that they are not beginning to taper. One time, surprise me, second time is a trend.  Or. most likely, it is the Debt Ceiling expiration that’s coming quickly upon us.. This morning, the currencies are mixed, with the euro up a bit, but below 1.36, the Japanese yen stronger on thoughts of a U.S. default, but the Antipodean currencies are weaker.  A story on the Bloomberg this morning caught my eye. The title read: “Dollar Rebound Predicted by Most-Accurate Forecaster”.  So, you know I just had to check it out to see why the “Mr. Most-Accurate Forecaster” thinks the dollar will rebound. I’m not saying it can’t, I just want to know his reason. And that reason turns out to be, that he believes the U.S. economy is strong, and will outperform economic growth of the Eurozone, and Japan. So, at this point, I’ve got to think that “Mr. Most-Accurate Forecaster” has been eating the same fortified with 8 essential vitamins, cereal that the Fed Heads were eating, for this sounds like a lot of the Fed Heads, to which, and you can check this in the archives, I’m on record saying months ago that the Fed Heads were being overly optimistic about the economy when they began talking about tapering. That’s all I’ll say about this, for what do I know? I mean, “Mr. Most-Accurate Forecaster” probably has a research team the size of the population of Rhode Island! But. so do the Fed Heads. Friday morning, I received a notice from a currency dealer that said “The First ESM Benchmark Syndication is Expected for Next Week.”   And my eye lit up! And here’s why! The ESM is the European Stability Mechanism.  I explained months ago what this was all about, but to make a long story short, the ESM is a bill funding program that’s been in place for about a year, that’s used to provide liquidity and long-term funding to the countries that need it. The difference between what was being done for the last year, and now is the ESM is going to issue a bond in syndication. In other words, take requests. RFP   request for proposal, as many contract salespeople know all about, and me with my city governance background. Understand this process.    But the biggest thing is the ability to do long term funding with the aim to establish a benchmark curve and a liquid secondary market over time. The first issue will be used to cover the Cypriot bailout and refinance bills for the Spanish banking recapitalization program.  This is all good for the euro going forward, folks.. At least that’s my opinion, of which I could be wrong! So. in the biggest display of “why was that done?” . You know the 800,000 government workers that were sent home last week? Well, the House passed a bill on Friday to pay these furloughed workers retroactive pay. So. what the 800,000 Government workers are getting right now, is a paid holiday. Paid for by taxpayers of course! You know, the people that go to work every day, produce something, generate wages, and pay taxes. So, why did we send those workers home, knowing that it wasn’t going to save us money in the first place?  Reminds me of the Dire Straits song: Money for nothing. The Pentagon ordered furloughed employees back to work this past weekend. Yes, we do have a couple of wars going on, and I would think that if there were people that are needed to be at their jobs it would be these people, that is as long as we feel we have to fight wars in other countries. Wanna save some big bucks for the country and make a whole lot of people happy, happy, happy? End the wars. And don’t stop with the wars overseas, how about here at home? The war of drugs, poverty, and so on. We’ve not made any headway on any of these over the years, so why continue? There are more people considered to be in Poverty Levels now than ever, so, great job fighting that war! The U.S. Debt stuff has taken over as what’s on the minds of the market participants. Tapering, Schapering. The Debt Ceiling is what it’s all about now.  One would think that any country that’s not experiencing a possible default would have a currency that’s gaining against the dollar right now, but that’s not the case. It’s all a bunch of “wait-n-see” Right now, it seems that the Usual Suspects when it comes to what the markets call “safe havens” are in play here. Japanese yen, Swiss francs and to a lesser degree, euros seem to be the only real winners, as we begin Day 7 of the PS, and draw one day closer to the Debt Ceiling expiration of Rocktober 17th. Japan has a greater Gov’t Debt than the U.S. but, they aren’t running into the possibility of a default. And Swiss francs? Some old habits just don’t die. The Markets’ participants have viewed francs as a safe haven for so long now that even with the franc tied to the euro, they still go there.  Hey! I’ve always told you that the markets are fickle. and at times have a very different viewpoint than logic would say. The Antipodean currencies of Australia and New Zealand are both seeing some selling this morning, but the moves are small in nature (less than 1/4-cent). There’s not much going on in this region of the world this week. Australia will report their September labor numbers later in the week, and that’s it.. (at least as far as I can see).  These two currencies have really bounced around a lot lately. You have to be patient here. Gold spent another day on Friday, flip-flopping around, going from positive to negative and back to positive, but remaining above $1,300. This morning, Gold is up $2, but we all know that a small gain like that is vulnerable to the whims of the NY traders. I read a note from the author of the book on “Greenspan’s Bubbles” Bill Fleckenstein this past weekend, where he was talking about Gold. Let’s listen in to Bill Fleckenstein. “At some point there will be big move to the upside (in gold), and we will play catch-up for some of the monetary crimes that have been committed in the last couple of years … My belief is that we saw the lows and that gold is going to work its way higher from here, and at some point it will accelerate. … It’s just mind boggling to me that people in America are so comfortable with the inflation that we have, and they act as though it’s deflation.  It’s rather stunning to me, the particular strategy now amongst people when they raise prices is they shrink the size of what they give you and they don’t call it a price hike.” Chuck again. I like what Bill Fleckenstein usually has to say, and have for a long time. He’s a very logical thinking person, and you can’t beat that! The U.S. Data Cupboard is still being adjusted because of the PS. We’ll begin to get some data this week though. in fact I’m told that the Jobs Jamboree will take place tomorrow. But don’t hold me to that, we are talking about Gov’t schedules! And before I go to the Big Finish. Man. did I ever just blow by the American priced currencies on Friday, UGH! I meant to type: American Style: A$ .9445, kiwi .8340, C$ .9705, euro 1.3605, sterling 1.6075, Swiss $1.1075 I have no idea what happened, just goes to show you that even though you do something 5-days a week for over 20 years, you can still mess up! For What It’s Worth. I saw this come through the email from MarketWatch on Friday, and thought it to be interesting. The article is about how the writer believes that the panic in Gold is over, and he can tell by watching the flows into the ETFs. Here’s a snippet.. “Gold outflows have been steadily declining since peaking in April 2013, said Nick Brooks, head of global research and investment strategy at ETF Securities. Outflows that month were at $8.7 billion. He said the main reason for that reduction is that the “bulk of shorter-term tactical money that went into gold over 2011 and 2012 has now been cleared” and gold ETP holdings are now back at 2010 levels. After record outflows from gold-backed exchange-traded products in the second quarter, outflows slowed down significantly in the third quarter. Investors were quitting their gold funds, just not with the urgency they showed in prior months.” Chuck again. You know me. I’m not a fan of the ETF’s. I’m a “physical ownership” kind of guy. But I think this information is good to know, given that the masses opt for the ETF’s, so flows are important. To recap. The markets seem to be in wait-n-see mode. In one corner we have the question of when the Fed will begin to taper if ever. And in the other corner we have the PS and the looming problem of the Debt Ceiling expiration growing closer, and the warnings of catastrophe should we default hanging over the markets like the Sword of Damocles. The bias to sell dollars remains in place, but the trading ranges are very tight. And Gold keeps flip-flopping, like a fish that jumps off the hook while in the boat! Currencies today 10/7/13. More than a million gallons of untreated wastewate

by ,

first_imgMore than a million gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into a Greensboro creek due to heavy rains from Florence, among the largest such incidents in modern memory.According to the City of Greensboro, roughly 1.3 million gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into local waters on September 17. The discharge happened over the span of about 23 hours. When the remnants of Hurricane Florence dropped significant rainfall on the region, rising waters from Middle Reedy Fork Creek flooded the wastewater treatment facility there, shutting down the pumps and paralyzing the facility. That’s what ultimately led to the discharge.Greensboro officials say the area downstream, which is a tributary of the Cape Fear River basin, has been thoroughly tested, with no impact being found. This is the third such Florence-related incident reported by the city this week.On Monday, 625,000 gallons of wastewater discharged from a manhole on Battleground Ave. And on Sunday, about 63,000 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into North Buffalo Creek.last_img read more

A nurse failed to mention a disabled womans near

by ,

first_imgA nurse failed to mention a disabled woman’s near-fatal asthma attacks, accidental overdoses and repeated blackouts, in one of the clearest examples yet of a dishonest benefits assessment report, secret recordings have revealed.A video recording of the assessment also shows that the nurse lied about the way disabled activist Catherine Scarlett made her way from a stairlift to a reclining chair to begin the assessment.Scarlett had been so distrustful of the personal independence payment (PIP) system that she made both video and audio recordings of her face-to-face assessment, which was carried out at her home in Yorkshire in May.She says the recordings and assessment report prove she was right to do so.They show how the nurse – employed by the government contractor Atos Healthcare – repeatedly downplayed the seriousness of what she was told by Scarlett. This allowed the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to lower her entitlement from the enhanced rate to just the standard rate for the daily living element of PIP, although she was allowed to stay on the enhanced rate for mobility. At one point, Scarlett is heard on the recording telling the nurse that on several occasions she had accidentally double-dosed the powerful opioid pain medication Tramadol, but the nurse translates that in her written report as “occasionally forgets to take her medication”.Scarlett also tells the nurse that she cannot read for long periods “because I black out”, but this ends up in the report as “she can read although she doesn’t read for long due to concentration”.When Scarlett describes how she has previously experienced “near-fatal asthma attacks”, the nurse writes this up in her report as episodes of being “wheezy and short of breath”, which “comes and goes”.And when the nurse asks her if she has ever thought of taking her own life, Scarlett tells her that she has felt like ending her life “lots of times” and that she experiences “impulsive urges to commit suicide and things like that”.This is translated as “she has had thoughts of not wanting to be here”.Scarlett is also furious that the nurse suggested that she did not need to carry out a physical examination if that meant she would be “wiped out for the week”.When Scarlett agreed and said she was “not really” keen on having the examination, the nurse was able to use her decision to decline the physical tests to justify relying instead on an inaccurate description of how she claimed she saw Scarlett “grip and operate a crutch in each hand” as she was walking from a chairlift to her seat, in order to play down her need for support for bathing and dressing.DWP later admitted – when it eventually overturned its original findings – that she lacked the necessary grip and strength in her right hand and arm “to be able to dress yourself reliably and in a timely manner”.The video clearly shows Scarlett walking with a stooped posture, leaning heavily on the crutches, and flopping into the chair, but not touching its arms. But the nurse writes this up as: “She walked from the bottom of the stairs to her specialist reclining chair using a crutch in each hand. She walked very slowly with normal posture.“She lowered herself into the chair by putting her hands on the chair and lowered herself into it.”Scarlett believes that her case, and many others she has been passed by other disabled people through social media, show that DWP is “colluding” with Atos in order to cut people’s support. She said: “I have been shocked at the effect on my mental health and the thoughts it has brought up for me and can understand why it pushes so many people completely over the edge.“I’m lucky to have strong family, friends and professional support that keeps me going but so many people aren’t as lucky and so are very vulnerable to devastating mental health deterioration and the consequences of that.“The whole system needs fully investigating and changing to protect those people.”Following the decision to reduce her support, a mandatory reconsideration (MR) – DWP’s own internal review process – endorsed that decision, although the department finally agreed last month to return her daily living to the enhanced rate when she appealed against the MR decision. In that decision, DWP accepted that Scarlett did after all need help to dress and take a bath. For technical reasons, DNS was not able to share the video recording with Atos and DWP, but the audio recording was shared with their press offices.DNS originally agreed to omit the allegations connected with the video recording so that DWP would comment on the evidence provided solely by the audio recording. But this morning, after agreeing to this and asking for extra time to produce a response – the audio recording was originally sent to DWP and Atos on Tuesday afternoon – a DWP spokeswoman failed to comment on any of the evidence contained in the audio recording.Instead, she merely pointed out that Scarlett’s PIP entitlement was eventually restored, after she appealed, to the daily living enhanced rate. She also repeated previous DWP statements about the “strict quality standards” required of assessment providers, and the “on-going quality audits” that assessors are subjected to, as well as mentioning the complaints procedures available to PIP claimants. An Atos spokesman refused to comment on the evidence at all.He said: “We’re informed we won’t have access to the video which accompanies the audio without which the points raised cannot be looked into as verification is simply not possible.”Scarlett’s case is one of 22 that have been passed to Labour MP Neil Coyle (see separate story), who has pledged to take up concerns about allegations of dishonest assessment reports when parliament returns from its summer recess next month.Disability News Service (DNS) has been investigating since last November claims that healthcare professionals working for Atos and Capita have been lying in their assessment reports.DNS has now compiled more than 200 cases in which PIP claimants say their assessors produced dishonest reports. The investigation shows that assessors – most of them nurses – have repeatedly lied, ignored written evidence and dishonestly reported the results of physical examinations. But DWP, Capita and Atos have all refused to launch inquiries into the claims of widespread dishonesty.Picture: Scarlett flops into her seat at the start of the assessment, watched by her husbandlast_img read more

What You Can Learn From British Airwayss IT Meltdown That Left Passengers

first_img Invest in systems you need and keep your customers informed. British Airways had a rough weekend.Due to a power surge early Saturday morning and a backup that failed to work, the airline’s computer systems broke down. The crash prompted British Airways to cancel all departing flights from Heathrow and Gatwick airports, effectively stranding 75,000 people. And once the passengers arrived at their destinations, there was no guarantee that their luggage would be waiting for them.It was a chaotic and ultimately expensive mishap for British Airways. The market value of IAG, the airline’s parent company, dropped by about $643,550,000. Not only that, but The Guardian reports that customers inconvenienced by the IT issues had to pay up to $2,059 in additional travel costs, leaving the company with a hefty compensation $192 million compensation bill.Related: These 10 Countries Will See the Most Business Travelers in the Next DecadeIf you’re sleeping on the floor of an airport terminal, of course you aren’t going to have a ton of understanding for the organization that put you in that position. 5 Steps to Setting Up a Wireless Network

by ,

first_img 5 Steps to Setting Up a Wireless Network –shares 8 min read Does your business need a wireless network? If you think the answer is yes, read on to discover how easy it is to set one up. Next Article Learn from renowned serial entrepreneur David Meltzer how to find your frequency in order to stand out from your competitors and build a brand that is authentic, lasting and impactful. Image credit: Henrik Sorensen | Getty Images Add to Queuecenter_img July 1, 2004 Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brand Wireless networks are becoming faster, more affordable and easier to adopt than ever. Growing small businesses that have adopted a wireless solution are already reporting immediate paybacks in higher productivity, flexible application mobility and greater worker satisfaction. Roughly 228,000 small businesses currently have remote access capabilities built into their networks for security monitoring and, according to America Marketing Institute, the number will double over the next 12 months.A wireless infrastructure can make it easier to reconfigure your office space as your company grows and changes. Also, the total cost of a wireless local area network (LAN) is relatively inexpensive–it’s become very affordable in the past few years, and prices continue to drop. When you take into account productivity gains, both inside the office and at public “hot spots,” going wireless is an obvious choice, especially when compared to the cost of running a Cat 5 network LAN cable throughout a building. If you’re interested in setting up a wireless network at your company, this guide will walk you through the steps needed to evaluate the role wireless networking technologies might play in your company’s overall networking solution, and help you understand the steps you need to take to implement the solution.Step 1: Understand it. Learn about the benefits of wireless and how it can help your business save money and be more productive.Wired networks may give the appearance of a busy office full of the latest equipment, but in reality, wires can be an inefficient networking medium. They can limit signal strength as well as make it more difficult to expand and reorganize your network configuration.Wireless networking is a viable and affordable alternative that offers the benefits of making your environment more flexible. A wireless infrastructure allows you to effortlessly reconfigure your office space as your company grows and changes, easily extend connectivity and also allows employees to be mobile more easily.Even though the cost of wireless LAN hardware and software can be slightly more expensive, this is offset by the wired LAN cabling and installation costs you can avoid. Add to that the soft-dollar saving benefits associated with wireless LAN and the convenience of being able to move around in a facility and stay connected, and your overall costs are lower still.Step 2: Plan it. You should first conduct an assessment that includes an anticipated return on investment, and then investigate what it will take to integrate wireless technologies with your existing infrastructure.Review the advantages and consider the benefits to your organization:Reduced cost of installation. It may be significantly less expensive to install wireless access points compared to wiring your office with Ethernet capabilities.Flexibility. If you regularly expand or reorganize your office space, or need to accommodate a variety of network configurations, the rapid transition time from one configuration to another that wireless provides can help reduce your network downtime. In addition, you won’t have to incur the costs associated with physically rewiring office space.Convenient information access. With wireless, you’d have the ability to extend access to key information to anyone on your staff, from anywhere in the office, even when they aren’t physically connected to your wired local area network (LAN) connection. Do members of your staff regularly work away from their desks or stations, but could benefit from anytime, anywhere access to important data? Could you improve productivity by increasing access to important company systems? Do you have business processes you could streamline by reducing the number of times employees have to go back to their wired connections?Wireless LANs are the way to go, especially where there’s no existing wired network. This is especially true in leased offices, where you can’t go knocking holes in wallsYou should next consider what integration points you’ll need to address for the solution to work:Evaluate your current and future networking needs. How is your current networking infrastructure configured? How many workstations, offices and conference rooms are connected to the network? How many are not connected that you would like to connect? How many people use the computers and communications systems in your company now? Does your staff conduct business at locations away from their primary work area? What kind of equipment does your staff use? Are they mobile with notebook computers and PDAs or do the majority of your workers use desktop systems? Do those who would benefit most from wireless, mobile access already use notebooks? And if you’re in a leased building with no existing wired network, setting up a wireless network is must simpler than knocking holes in the walls to install your network cables.Formulate a plan. The equipment you buy and the way you configure your wireless network will be driven by your business needs and plan, so it’s important to develop a plan before you spend any money on equipment or other resources.Step 3: Do it. Once you have a plan in place that defines how you want to add wireless networking capabilities to your office space, you can get down to the business of actually setting up your wireless network. It’s easier than you might think. The first step involves understanding the equipment involved in a wireless network.Wireless LAN equipment consists of two main components:Wireless clients, which are any devices capable of communicating over a wireless LAN, such as a notebook computer, printer or handheld.Access points, that is, the centers of the wireless-to-wired LAN connectivity. These points aggregate wireless radio signals and then connect the two LANs. The access point is generally book-sized. It contains a radio transceiver, communications and encryption software, and an Ethernet port for a cable connection to a hub or a switch on the wired LAN.Your next step is to actually build a wireless LAN, which you’ll do just like this:Identify the equipment you want to buy, such as wireless notebooks, access points, wireless LAN adapters and wireless cards.Determine the number of users who need to have access to the network. This will help you determine the number of access points you’ll need.Plan for the connection to your wired LAN, probably in a central location and in an open environment. Your goal is to maximize the access point’s wireless range. The quoted range is a maximum of 300 feet, but that’s very dependant on the existing environment–walls, water pipes, cables and so on all could decrease the range. The best thing to do is complete a site survey first; if that’s not possible, assume a maximum range of 150 feet, as 300 could decrease throughput.Configure your wireless devices to work with your network.Test the installation before it goes live. Using link test software, you should test for the percent of data sent correctly, the time it takes to receive a response from the destination device, and the strength of the transmitted signal.Establish a procedure to manage your wireless LAN.Step 4: Use it. Because wireless communications are transmitted through the air rather than over a closed cable, you’ll need to implement some wireless-specific security measures to ensure that your wireless communications are secure. Wireless solutions use three primary tactics:MAC (media access control) addressing. This ensures the network access point you purchase supports MAC which restricts network access by unauthorized devices by assigning each network card a unique hardware identification number.WEP encryption. It’s essentially a complicated software algorithm that scrambles data as it’s sent and unscrambles it as soon as it’s received, keeping it safe in transit. It also ensures that you can easily upgrade your access cards as new wireless access standards emerge.Traditional VPN (Virtual Private Network) securities controls. This allows users outside of your system to have access to it. Businesses that use remote access almost always use VPN and combined with the other tactics makes your wireless network extremely secure.VPNs work by encrypting data before it’s sent over a wireless (or wired) link, so even if someone intercepts the transmission, the data is secure. Many larger companies use VPNs, but smaller companies may also just rely on standard wireless encryption. This will be okay if the wireless LAN is only used internally, but if you plan to use public ‘hot spots’, you will need to use a VPN.Step 5: Support it. If you find you need additional help or support, or are planning a larger-scale implementation, there are numerous suppliers and consultants that can offer additional information and support. Hewlett-Packard, for example, offers access to mobility and wireless experts via live chat or via phone at (800) 888-0262. These suppliers and consultants can help you understand your options, configure your network, set up your systems, and get you up and running quickly and efficiently.Richard Stone is a wireless and mobility solutions manager for HP Americas. Priced at $11.99 for a box of eight pods, Keurig owners can now brew Chicken Noodle Soup with their machines. The two-step process begins with a packet of dried noodles and spices, which Keurig suggests emptying into a mug. Next, the broth is brewed over top of the mixture in order for it to cook. The soups are available in two flavors, Homestyle and Southwest Style — each of which packs 70 calories and is made with no artificial colors or flavors, the companies say. In order to avoid contaminating flavors between coffee and soup brews, “The machine doesn’t need to be cleaned, but we recommend running a hot water brew cycle without a pod before and after making the soup,” a Campbell’s spokesperson told Entrepreneur.Related: The Keurig K-Cup’s Inventor Says He Feels Bad That He Made It. Keurig has already forayed beyond hot beverages with a long-awaited machine called Kold launching later this year that can homebrew Coca-Cola products.“We know more than 80 percent of people who buy Keurig pods also buy Campbell’s soup,” added Campbell’s marketing director Michael Goodman, in a statement, “so bringing together two products people love in one handy kit is a winning idea.”The collaboration comes as Keurig sales seem to have been put on ice. Mekedatu dam issue Centre to call for Karnataka TN CMs meeting soon

by ,

first_img COMMENT COMMENTS The Centre has decided to call a meeting of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu chief ministers soon to resolve the issue regarding the proposed construction of Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery river that led to stalling of Parliament proceedings last week. The issue was discussed in detail by Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy in a meeting with Union Water resources and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday here.“In the meeting, Gadkari said he was convinced that the Mekedatu project will benefit Tamil Nadu. The minister also assured that he will direct his officials to fix a meeting of chief ministers of the two states at the earliest,” an official spokesperson told reporters. The Mahadayi water dispute between Karnataka and Goa was discussed in the meeting, but the Union minister said the matter is in court, he added.Gadkari has said he will call the meeting of chief ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to discuss the implementation of the project, according to an official statement. The Karnataka chief minister during the meeting brought to his notice that Tamil Nadu has raised objection against the project though it is beneficial to both states, especially for Tamil Nadu, the statement added. He also requested Gadkari to resolve the issue by calling the meetings of the chief ministers. “Gadkari obliged to call a meeting accordingly,” it said. Kumaraswamy told PTI that “we have asked the Centre to call for a meeting with the Tamil Nadu government so that the issue can be resolved.” With the two main Tamil Nadu parties — AIADMK and DMK — protesting in Parliament opposing the Mekedatu project, Karnataka lawmakers, cutting across party lines, have planned an agitation Thursday in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex to counter the two parties. The AIADMK and the DMK are agitating in both Houses of Parliament pressing for scrapping of the proposed dam project. The Tamil Nadu government has also appealed in the Supreme Court on the matter.Kumaraswamy’s brother and PWD Minister HD Revanna as well as Karnataka Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar were also present in the meeting in Delhi.Besides, these two water disputes, the Karnataka chief minister also discussed with the Union minister about the pending national highway projects in the state. He sought commencement of the construction of the six-lane Bengaluru-Mysure Road, for which the Karnataka government has already acquired 85 per cent of the required land. The chief minister requested Gadkari to direct the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for construction of the Bengaluru-Hassan section of the NH-75. Kumaraswamy also urged the Union minister to ask the NHAI to complete the work between Hassan to Gundya via Sakaleshpura (NH-75) and four-laning of the NH-206 from Tumkur-Honnavara. The chief minister also sought the construction of a four-lane divided carriageway between Hassan to Holenarasipur and sanction of a six-lane elevated highway in Hassan town limit on Belur-Bilikere of the NH-373.
