More than a million gallons of untreated wastewate

by ,

first_imgMore than a million gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into a Greensboro creek due to heavy rains from Florence, among the largest such incidents in modern memory.According to the City of Greensboro, roughly 1.3 million gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into local waters on September 17. The discharge happened over the span of about 23 hours. When the remnants of Hurricane Florence dropped significant rainfall on the region, rising waters from Middle Reedy Fork Creek flooded the wastewater treatment facility there, shutting down the pumps and paralyzing the facility. That’s what ultimately led to the discharge.Greensboro officials say the area downstream, which is a tributary of the Cape Fear River basin, has been thoroughly tested, with no impact being found. This is the third such Florence-related incident reported by the city this week.On Monday, 625,000 gallons of wastewater discharged from a manhole on Battleground Ave. And on Sunday, about 63,000 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into North Buffalo Creek.last_img read more

Attendees visit the Foxconn lounge at the MMAC all

first_imgAttendees visit the Foxconn lounge at the MMAC all-member meetingLast updated on July 2nd, 2019 at 09:11 pmThe first LCD fabrication facility on the Foxconn Technology Group campus in Mount Pleasant will be a Gen 6 plant, not a Gen 10.5 plant as originally planned. The change gives Foxconn more flexibility in deciding which products to produce in Wisconsin but also removes the need for a Corning glass plant to co-locate at the site, Louis Woo, special assistant to Foxconn chairman Terry Gou, said in an interview this week.Attendees visit the Foxconn lounge at the MMAC all-member meetingWoo stressed the company is not changing its plans to create 13,000 jobs and invest $10 billion in Wisconsin.“Those have not changed. We would never change that,” he said. “That’s our commitment to the government, that’s our commitment to the state of Wisconsin. It’s just the nature of the technology, what kind of technology we are bringing in, what kind of product we will produce, that will continue to change.” Woo said the change in plans is about producing a wider variety of screen sizes and is still the latest technology. A Gen 6 plant would allow Foxconn to produce screens for items ranging from a notebook computer to a central display in an autonomous vehicle to an 80- or 90-inch television.“The Gen 6 would give us a lot of versatility,” Woo said.He said a rapidly-evolving high tech industry and shifting supply and demand characteristics drive the change in plans. Building the first thin-film-transistor or TFT-Fab in the U.S. will give the company the opportunity to explore new display technologies or other semiconductor processing technology on glass.“We are very excited about our current choices,” Woo said.Opting for a Gen 6 plant will also eliminate one potential roadblock to establishing operations. A Gen 10.5 plant would require a glass plant to be co-located on the Mount Pleasant site. New York-based Corning Inc. was expected to build a $1 billion facility, but Wendell Weeks, Corning chairman, CEO and president, said on the company’s most recent earnings call any new plant would require two of every three dollars to come from another source. Wisconsin officials have said they will not offer additional incentives to support the Foxconn project. The state is already providing an incentive package of about $3 billion and local incentives and infrastructure improvement costs for the Foxconn project total another $1.5 billion.Woo said a glass plant “would no longer be a necessity” with a Gen 6 plant.“We can just ship (glass) from somewhere else, could be from Kentucky or somewhere,” he said. “That would be still palatable because the pieces of glass that would be required would be a lot smaller.”Corning currently has a glass plant located in Kentucky.Bob O’Brien, a partner at Display Supply Chain Consultants, told BizTimes in May a Gen 6 plant produces roughly 5 foot by 6 foot panels while a Gen 10.5 plant produces 10 foot by 11 foot panels. He also said a $10 billion investment makes sense for a Gen 10.5 plant, but a Gen 6 plant would require a $2 billion to $3 billion investment. The second phase of what Foxconn calls the Wisconn Valley Science and Technology Park could include a Gen 10.5 plant, Woo said, and adding a glass plant would likely be a necessity at that point.Louis Woo, special assistant to Foxconn chairman Terry Gou, visits a recruiting event at Marquette.Woo’s comments confirm elements of a Nikkei Asian Review story from May that said Foxconn would turn to producing smaller screens from its Wisconsin plant. At the time, Foxconn called the report inaccurate and said it was committed to its job and capital investment targets. The company’s statements did leave open the possibility of a shifting product mix and a phased approach to developing the campus.Even with the shift in plans, hiring is underway at the company’s operations in Milwaukee and Mount Pleasant. Foxconn currently has around 100 employees in Wisconsin between the two locations, according to Chris Murdoch, Foxconn senior advisor and the company’s first employee in the state. After purchasing the 611 Building at 617 E. Wisconsin Ave. in downtown Milwaukee from Northwestern Mutual, Foxconn announced last week it would make the building its North American headquarters and plan to employ 500 employees at the site. The company also has a leased facility in Mount Pleasant where it is experimenting with production methods.“I think you’ll see over the next several months the hiring will start to ramp up,” Murdoch said. “(In) our agreement with the state of Wisconsin there are certain goals for hiring and people employed as part of the project, so we’ll be looking to meet those goals.”Foxconn’s contract with the state requires the company to have at least 260 full-time employees at the end of the year to receive any tax credits and 1,040 to receive the maximum $9.5 million in credits available this year. The actual credits the company will receive are equal to 17 percent of its qualifying payroll for the year.“If we have a goal to achieve, to us it doesn’t matter whether it’s realistic or not,” Woo said when asked if the company could still reach the upper end of its hiring target for the year. “It’s the goal that we signed on so we will certainly do our best to make it happen.” Get our email updatesBizTimes DailyManufacturing WeeklyNonprofit WeeklyReal Estate WeeklySaturday Top 10Wisconsin Morning Headlines Subscribelast_img read more

Founded by Egwuekwe, Petya Grady, and Audrey Jones, CodeCrew teaches middle and high school students essential technology skills, like coding, app development, Javascript, Python, and more. Based in Memphis, CodeCrew is focused on equipping the city’s underrepresented groups with tech skill and knowledge.“My co-founders and I very much believe that persuading more kids from underrepresented groups to consider college, career, and entrepreneurship in computer science is fundamental to the prosperity of Memphis,” Egwuekwe wrote in an email. “This city will soon be the first majority African American metropolis in the country, and we cannot ‘white and Asian male’ our way to prosperity. We must persuade young African Americans, Latinos, and girls to pursue these 21st-century opportunities, or else.” CodeCrew recently wrapped up a two-day Memphis City Pride hackathon, where kids who had participated in the organization’s three summer camps came together to meet a programming challenge and compete for prizes. The event was funded by CodeCrew’s first and most prominent partner, the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Memphis Grizzlies NBA basketball team. More than 40 middle school and high school kids participated.“The event lived up to being a high energy, exciting affair that got kids pumped about coding, just as we’d intended,” Egwuekwe says. I was thrilled to meet Meka Egwuekwe, executive director of the nonprofit CodeCrew, at the 2016 Black Enterprise TechConneXt Summit in San Francisco. Egwuekwe quit his job to run CodeCrew. He is a former director of software development at Lokion Interactive and has been a software developer for 19 years.Putting Memphis on the Tech Map In addition to the hands-on tech training CodeCrew provides, the organization has been influential in returning computer science elective classes to at least two inner city Memphis schools. Egwuekwe expects these course offerings to grow and expand.“This is also our first step towards eventually offering AP computer science [classes] in urban schools,” he says.Although CodeCrew is focused on Memphis, Egwuekwe and his co-founders are seeking to grow its networks “dynamically beyond Memphis.”“We will be an active partner in Oakland-based Qeyno Labs’ upcoming Tech Equity Week in April 2017. We also hope to develop ties with other organizations, such as Yes We Code, Code.org, The Hidden Genius Project, and others. CodeCrew firmly believes in the cooperative spirit of spreading youth tech education to underrepresented groups across Memphis and across the country.”For more about CodeCrew, visit the website. A former Christian monastery surrounded by nature

by ,

first_imgA former Christian monastery surrounded by nature was the place where the Hyojeong Cheongpyeong Seminar took place on January 26-27 in Vicente Casares (County of Cañuelas, Province of Buenos Aires). A team of brothers and sisters decorated the place with dedication and love, despite the short time available. This way, we showed gratitude to Heavenly Parents and True Parents for hosting this grace as part of the 2019 Heavenly Latin America Tour (Sub-region 2), with more than 304 participants from Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, and Bolivia, among others. The event took place during the last days of the international 21-day seminar, with more than 100 young people who helped create the environment, as well as the spiritual conditions from all participants. We specially thank our True Mother, who requested that the Cheongpyeong Providence reach the most distant places, appointing Rev. Seong Nam Kim as Director of this mission in Heavenly Latin America and Mr. David Pereyra as the lecturer. Both of them, with Rev. Sung Jong Seo, Director of Sub-region 2, came to Argentina a week before to hold a seminar on Cheongpyeong and all organizational details. A few days after joined Rev. San Suek Kim, Director of Heavenly Latin America, who was given a report on the preparations by National Leader of Argentina Carlos Varga.Chanyang Yeoksa sessions were moments to express deep gratitude to Heaven along with a team of young people who were an example of dedication. Families and the youth had profound experiences during these sessions, as well as in the Ancestor Liberation and Blessing, Spirit World and Physical World Matching and Blessing, and Hyojeong Offering Ceremonies (see programs, testimonies, and reflections). The event ended with a chorus, a solo singer, and a dance performed by a second generation couple. At the end, we sang together “Saranghae,” guided by Rev. Sang Suek Kim, Rev. Seong Nam Kim, and Rev. Sung Jong Seo, along with leadership representatives of each country. We also had a delicious cake to celebrate this spiritual experience which opens the doors for our absolutely good ancestors, patriots and saints to cooperate with the mission of each Blessed Family and national restoration in times of the substantial establishment of Cheon Il Guk.ReflectionsEzequiel Montero – Chanyang Team from Argentina: “I did not have experience in this activity, and my lack of knowledge about the significance of Chanyang did not allow me to appreciate its value. However, our central figure told us, ‘You are the heavenly soldiers who should create the spirit for the victory of the establishment of the Cheongpyeong spirit.’ Since then, I invested my most sincere devotion and had an unforgettable experience. For a second, while we were practicing, I saw above us a white dove which illuminated the whole room for a moment with its peaceful flutter. Without thinking too much about it, I came with a conclusion: the heart and eyes of the Holy Spirit were present in this Cheongpyeong branch from Korea. True Mother, in the distance, was observing every detail along with True Father.”Andrés Melgarejo – Blessed Family from Argentina: “Cheongpyeong providence is a miraculous expression of the love which goes beyond all knowledge and which challenges our comprehension of its significance and value. We do not only feel the revolution around us and with our ancestors, but we can also see our brothers and sisters deeply moved by the amazing renewal of energies. In our joint prayers, we could feel once again that deep regret when True Parents would surprise us with some of the many gifts and blessings for the nation and for each one of us. The first time we experienced Cheongpyeong was in 2001 in Sao Pablo (Brazil). Now I can see how True Parents’ victories have allowed this marvelous process of resurrection and rebirth to occur. I have also felt the grief for being immature to not understand such grace. Now, after the blessing and the “offering ceremony,” love is naturally flowing in all directions. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We can certainly feel this power that comes from our connection with the divine fatherly heart.”María Concepción de Sabini – Blessed Family from Argentina: “In the first Chanyang session, I felt a strange odor coming from my chest, in the second session as well. The more I hit, the more of the odor escaped. I also felt the presence of the ancestors. They looked like children, happy for True Parents’ grace. When I went outside to pray after the ancestors’ liberation, mi body, especially my lips, were swollen. I felt I had many spiritual bodies attached to me. I prayed and contemplated nature. I suddenly felt a gentle, cool breeze. Then, the swelling in my lips disappeared, as well as the spirits who were in my body. During the seminar, I felt gratitude and clarity about my purpose in the Providence, in True Parents’ community. I felt that my ancestors and I can be victorious to achieve the horizontal and vertical goal. I felt important. I am an absolute representative to my ancestors. I am committed to work and achieve my goal as a Tribal Messiah. Thank you for the Cheongpyeong grace, which will be a rebirth for my spiritual life.”Olga Juárez – Blessed Family from Argentina: “The first day, when we had to wake up and invite our spirits to share the seminar, I felt a deep shiver in my head that went down my feet. I was overcome by a powerful emotion that made me cry. I clearly saw the presence of the Spirit World, and I felt unworthy of being privileged to be un such an incredible position for them. I was grateful to God and True Parents for all the blessings received in a position of mediator for my ancestors. I think there is nothing more important and sacred, but it is also a great responsibility. The second day, I felt the presence of my father and my brother, and I felt they were as excited as me. I felt so many things that I cannot express with words. Thank you, Heavenly Parents. Thank you, dear True Parents.”Won Hwa Raquel Molinas Possamai (23 years) – Second generation from Paraguay: “I want to thank Heavenly Parents and True Parents for the opportunity to participate in this seminar. Being here is a gift from God and Heaven. I could not afford to travel here, and I could not attend other seminars; but at the last minute, without expecting it, we received heavenly fortune. Thank you, Heavenly Parents. This seminar was wonderful. Now I feel lighter, like I have less weight. During the last Chanyang session, at the ancestor’s liberation, exactly during the prayer, we were holding the hand that represents our ancestors. Even though I was not holding it very tight, it was firmly holding the other hand. I clearly felt they were by my side. I feel the blessings and true miracles will occur when I come back home with my family.”Soraya Araujo dos Santos – Blessed Family from Argentina: “I could feel the Spiritual World very close and how my ancestors were grateful to True Parents. During the sessions, I tried to sing as loud as I could, and I wanted to cough. And when I did, I felt something ripping out from my ovaries and coming through my throat, it was very painful. I felt this three times and, after that, I coughed once more and felt no more pain.”Marta Miyong Dantas – Second generation Blessed couple from Argentina: “I was spiritually connected during all Chanyang sessions. I was grateful for having another opportunity to liberate my ancestors. I was connected with God and I felt His heart of joy. I had a beautiful experience during the Blessing Ceremony, when they invited our ancestors to enter and receive the Blessing. I felt such a big, positive grace and thought how much joy my grandparents must have felt for being blessed. With this, I understood that our ancestors really need us.”José Sergio Castellón – Blessed Family from Argentina: “I had many experiences. One of them was when Rev. Kim, Cheongpyeong branch representative in Latin America, started to hit my head during Chanyang sessions, and he did it for a long time. Suddenly, he started to hit my back very strongly while I kept singing and clapping my hands. I felt a black thing, smoke-like, that came out of my mouth; I was overwhelmed and started to cry. Rev. Kim moved away and I kept clapping my hands with my eyes closed, and I felt that a little kid said, ‘Grandpa, now you have to hit your face.’”Joel Hernández Aurazo – 2016 Blessing from Peru: “I thank Heavenly Parents and True Parents for the opportunity of having the Cheongpyeong Training Center in Argentina and for being able to participate in the seminar. I also felt grace and regret during the Chanyang session. I suddenly heard my grandmother Flore Vera, mother of my father, who told me, ‘Thank you Joel Hernández.’ That gave me so much joy. This seminar helped me understand the importance of the Spiritual World. I will also commit to bless all my generations. I thank Heaven for everything and I will be always determined to achieve victory in my work.”Rubén Montero – Blessed Family from Argentina: “During the Blessing Ceremony, I was overcome by a strong feeling of sorrow after thinking that Jesus could not marry. I thought, with the heart of a father: Is there something more beautiful than seeing your son or daughter getting married? If Jesus wanted to marry, have a wife and a family, wouldn’t saints and people of God who are in the Spiritual World want to experience the same? At the end, when we said goodbye to our ancestors, I felt great joy, and that many people were happy. It was the same feeling I had when I received the Blessing. It was not only my joy, it was the joy of my ancestors and the whole Spiritual World.”Horacio Castellón – Blessed Family from Argentina: “During Chanyang sessions, while I was singing, I heard voices that came from the Spiritual World. The voices were strong and harmonious. I felt my ancestors were there. And last night, when I went to sleep, I was exhausted, and when I closed my eyes and was about to sleep, I started to sing the Grace of the Holy Garden. I suddenly woke up. I slept again and the same happened. It happened three or four times.”Mariela Varga Dourado – Second Generation from Argentina: “Thank you Heavenly Parents for giving us this seminar in Argentina. I feel I could break a wall that kept God from working directly in this nation and in Latin America. During the Chanyang session, I felt that not only we could better represent the spirit, but also that each participant could be part of the environment. Something wonderful happened to me after the session. While praying in the middle of nature and talking to God, I could feel His heart. I opened my eyes and saw my physical father approaching my younger brother and walked together. This made me feel that God is reaching out to His sons and daughters, and they can answer. I experienced a part of the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth during this seminar where we all have this loving relationship with God and everyone around us. Thank you God for showing me Your heart and for sharing with us the grace and blessings of Heaven.”Ruby from Uruguay: “I want to thank God and True Parents of Heaven, Earth and Humankind for being able to join such important event for Latin America. This time, I liberated my ancestors from my mother’s side. She passed away 10 years ago, on August 13. I went to Uruguay on December 3, 2001 and, until now, I did not know how her final days were or where her grave is. I have the same surname as her, since she was a single mother. She also had the surname of my grandma, who was also a single mother. But my mom told me that her father was a doctor with his last name being Montoya. I talked a lot with the sister who slept beside me during the seminar. When we said goodbye, we took a photo and decided to stay in touch. This is when I asked her surname: ‘Montoya,’ she said. I suddenly started to cry.”Estanislao Núñez de Acosta – 1995 Blessing: “I sincerely hope Cheongpyeong stays in Latin America, since it is very useful for our spiritual and physical cleansing. I think Latin America is going to face changes, that we can work for God’s Providence and restore our country and our people more rapidly. I felt True Parents and God’s presence. I saw something while we were singing. I saw many bright stars and I saw the face of True Parents, who were really happy. I had a feeling that is difficult to describe, I just poured tears and water through my nose. Aju, aju, aju. Thank you Heavenly Parents and True Parents.” Click to see more pictures 2019 Heavenly Latin America Tour – Sub-region 2By Miguel Werner, FFWPU Argentinalast_img read more

Bloody Basics The Hip Escape

by ,

first_img Bloody Basics: The Hip Escape Gordon Ryan Competition Kit Floyd Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton (Highlights) (via Erraticsboxing)As I said he who controls the clinch controls the fight and Mayweather uses it to pot shot his opponents before immediately getting chest to chest and preventing them from hitting him back. Once the opponent is happy to clinch back, however, Mayweather begins his typical elbow tactics – cross facing his opponent and landing free shots as their hands are in a position of trying to clinch, rather than trying to box. Notice how many times Floyd hits his opponents while he is doing more to wrestle them than boxing. The first major exponent of Greco-Roman wrestling in MMA, Randy Couture remains one of the few fighters to make full use of opportunities to clinch and the damage which can be done to the opponent from there. Bulldozing in worked on the casual martial artists who were still present in the earlier UFC events – but against Vitor Belfort, Couture showed that the clinch did not have to always be entered offensively – as is the method in wrestling – but could be entered in defence as it is in boxing but as a means to the wrestler’s ends. Here Couture attacks with a back-handed jab which had little chance of landing or causing any damage – but he immediately moves away from the counter which Belfort swings at him.As Belfort chases Couture back with strikes (as is his modus operandi) Couture stops retreating and smashes in chest to chest with Belfort, securing an underhook on Belfort’s punching left hand. The genius of Couture’s approach was that when a fighter is on the defensive his elbows are tight to his body and there are few good handles to grab a hold of. If an opponent holds this posture Couture can struggle to get a good clinch on them. Against Brandon Vera, Couture kept taking a grip on Vera’s neck and being shucked off as he tried to move Vera. If the opponent’s elbows can be lured away from his body, Couture can move in and grab at least one underhook with ease. Here Couture attempts to bait Belfort with a jab again but Belfort throws a left straight without committing and Couture leaves it at that.Where a good boxer would slip and look to counter punch – Couture’s counter is the clinch, where he can tire his opponents out, move them around and throw them. Here’s another example of Belfort attempting to punch Couture, then Randy leaning back and parrying before getting the underhooks on Belfort’s swinging arms. Later in Couture’s career, however, he began to jab into the clinch – but not in the way that most remember when they think of jabbing into the clinch. In a recent piece I observed that UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez often jabs his way in with his head bolt upright and can be force fed straights while doing so – as Cheick Kongo managed to and as an exhausted and flustered Junior dos Santos attempted to do.Couture’s method of moving to the clinch has evolved to be based around a dipping jab – taking his head offline to his right and inviting counter punches. Notice that when Randy jabs he dips his head very low to his right side – ducking it down behind his left shoulder. This sort of position invites counter punches but provides much more protection than his leaning back against Belfort did. As soon as the opponent opens up with punches, Couture is chest to chest with them and they have given him an underhook. One advantage of constantly using this dipping jab – other than avoiding most counter punches – is that Couture can invite counter punches with the opponents right hand which he can simply move inside of and underhook. Against Gabriel Gonzaga, Couture began using his dipping jab early and hit Gonzaga hard while the latter was moving in.Later in the same fight, Gonzaga threw back a right hand in response to Couture’s jab and Couture was able to underhook it and get a good punch off with his right hand. Couture used the inside slip to get close enough to grab a hold of Tim Sylvia numerous times in their bout.A final advantage of Randy Couture’s dipping jab over the traditional jab and run in to clinch method is that Couture dipped so low with his jab that it could be easily turned into a duck to get control of his opponent’s hips (something which Floyd Mayweather even used against Hatton in the highlight mentioned earlier, and which Prince Naseem would do when he was in trouble). After Gonzaga clipped Couture with a hard right hand, he chased Couture with another, Couture was able to slip to the side of and below the punch and get control of Gonzaga’s hips – which he soon turned into the first takedown of the fight.Randy Couture was a man of many tricks in the octagon – but it is hard to find a Couture fight in his later career where he doesn’t use this slower, dipping jab to draw attacks from his opponent or sneak his head in towards their chest or hips. The techniques needed by a grappler to secure a good clinch needn’t be many – Couture used his dipping jab and an occasional overhand, Fedor Emelianenko used his right hand lead almost exclusively – but anything beyond the traditional jab straight in method is a step forward in the evolution of wrestling in MMA, and a massive bolster to the success rate of wrestlers trying to obtain the clinch.Every wrestler should be looking to simplify and improve his striking to work with his primary skill rather than in place of it when he can’t get his techniques working. After all, a many wrestlers never forget their old tricks once they get to the position where they can use them. Here’s to ageing gracefully in the brutal world of combat sports. Latest From Our Partners Standard Ranked Rashguard Robert Whittaker hails ‘Wonderboy’ the best ‘outside fighter’ in MMA King Ryan Longsleeve Shirt Something which I have always found to be interesting about wrestlers is the longevity which their art can offer their mixed martial arts careers. Of course there are plenty of examples of great wrestlers who have gone on to become train wrecks, such as Mark Kerr, but the more thought you give it the more you realize that it is the men who can control the action and avoid punishment with their clinches who are able to keep their health throughout lengthier careers than their peers.Inspired by the retirement of the great Dan Severn at the ripe old age of 54, today I am going to be focusing (rather unusually) on wrestlers. I should clarify that by “wrestler” I don’t mean the Kevin Randleman breed of wrestler. Randleman had a vertical jump which looked as if it could be used to escape the octagon, and could shoot a successful double from half way across PRIDE’s thirty foot ring but he soon faded. Instead I should substitute the word “clinchers” – for he who controls the clinch controls the match. The man with the better clinching skills and technique in the clinch is able to avoid the punishment that strikes do to a fighter’s body and brain. This rule is universally true in combat sports from MMA to kickboxing to boxing. Even in sports in which it is outlawed to clinch – such as karate and K-1 – it is a useful means to escape a bad situation and will likely be tolerated for a while before the referee does anything about it. Take a quick gander at Floyd Mayweather’s clinch heavy performance against Ricky Hatton. Hatton made a career of taking punches to give punches because he hit harder than almost anyone in his division. Every time Mayweather hit Hatton coming in, he was immediately chest to chest and the majority of the time had a good underhook and a good overhook – the classical tie up. Not to mention his unheralded, yet extremely successful, crossover into Hollywood acting.Couture recently sat down with Kenny Rice of Inside MMA to discuss his future plans, potential comeback and more (shown above).”I was approached when Fedor [Emelianenko] threw his hat back into the ring after a four, five year layoff,” said Couture when asked if he’d ever return to professional MMA. “I was the first one they came to. It’s certainly something you have to consider and take seriously, but it’s not really about money. I think one of the more rational decisions I’ve probably made in my life was the decision to step down and hang them up.”While a comeback for Couture at this point is highly unlikely, it would certainly bring in a whole lot of money for the promotion willing to showcase a retired 52-year-old. His opponent in the main card bout at Nassau Coliseum, Timothy Johnson, is actually one of the more memorable heavyweight persona to come down the pike in recent years, with the combination of his magnificent mustache and his penchant for getting into bloody brawls, win or lose. It’s just that at the stage of your career Kongo now finds himself in, the guy on the other side of the cage at fight time is just another face.Kongo is 43 years old. He’s been a household name for North American mixed martial arts fans since he burst onto the scene with his vicious knockout of the late Gilbert Aldana at UFC 61. He’s had 63 professional fights between MMA and kickboxing. So if Johnson, who will be making his Bellator debut after going 4-3 in the UFC, is looking to use the veteran Kongo to make a statement in his new company’s heavyweight division, He’s not going to find an opponent willing to engage him on those terms.“It doesn’t matter, at this point,” Kongo told MMA Fighting. “They are all the same. No disrespect to Mr. Johnson, but every new fighter thinks they can make a name by beating the veteran. I will just worry about my own preparation, I will not be thinking anything about him specifically.”And while that might sound on the brash side, really, can you blame him? For those who haven’t been paying close attention, Kongo (28-10-2) is on the longest win streak of his 17-year career. Kongo’s taken six fights in a row, and eight of nine dating back to 2014, with the only loss during that span a a debatable split decision to Muhammed Lawal at Bellator 134.For his part, Kongo credits his success past age 40 to a company back in his hometown of Paris called Winback, which specializes in physical therapy. Kongo says the therapy has led to a better understanding of his body and has enabled him to feel better than ever as time marches on.“For so many years, my body was banged up,” Kongo said. “I would say, all but one of my losses in my career, I came into the fight with something wrong. Every other fight I was injured. But now I take my time. Now I get my proper rest. Now I’m not going all-out sparring all the time in training. Now I work with them to make sure my body is feeling good. It is no accident that I’ve won so many fights in a row since I started to get smarter and more serious about how I treat my body.”We’ve been ignoring the elephant in the room up to this point: Despite Kongo’s six-fight win streak, and 10-2 overall record since jumping over to Bellator in 2013, a run which includes a victory in one of the company’s tournaments during the previous regime, Kongo found himself on the outside looking in when the eight-man Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix tourney was announced.Kongo was named as an alternate to the tournament, which has its semifinals on back-to-back nights this weekend (Fedor Emelianenko vs. Chael Sonnen headlines Bellator 208, one night after Matt Mitrione and Ryan Bader just threw down in Uncasville, Conn.). And it’s clear not getting named to the main roster still gets under his skin.“Maybe management thinks I’m a piece of sh*t,” Kongo said. “I don’t know, you’ll have to ask them. Ask the management. I didn’t hear anything about the tournament until after it was already in place.Maybe Kongo will find himself placed in the tournament after all — last time Scott Coker put on a tourney of this magnitude, Daniel Cormier entered the legendary Strikeforce Grand Prix as an alternate and won it the whole thing — or maybe not. Either way, Kongo says that he’s going to ride this wave of success as far as it will take him.“If you ask me how long I can do this? I don’t have a date in mind,” Kongo said. “I’m having fun. I’m feeling as good as I ever had. I believe I can beat anyone in that tournament and any heavyweight in the world.” Good Night Tee Morning Report: Jorge Masvidal praises Conor McGregor: ‘The dude is a f*cking G, bro’ King Ryan Longsleeve Shirt Should Frankie Edgar finally fight at bantamweight? Pho So 1 had its licenses to serve both food and drinks revoked by the Boston Licensing Board, Boston Restaurant Talk reports.Universal Hub was at a hearing this week where the owners, members of the Nguyen family, stood accused of staying open past their legally licensed 10 p.m. closing time on multiple occasions.During the hearing, a Boston Police Department sergeant testified about driving by the shop “shortly before midnight” on Wednesday, February 8, and stopping to investigate after seeing lights and the TV on inside. The officer said three customers were still there, and he saw at least two with full bottles of beer, UHub reports. The harsh punishment—revoking Pho So 1’s licenses effectively shutters the establishment—is because this is apparently the fifth time this has happened in just seven months. A Pho So 1 regular attended the hearing and pleaded the non-English-speaking restaurateur’s case, explaining cultural reasons why the Nguyens could not simply kick patrons out when it should be closing time. But the hearing made it real for the owner: The regular said, “he gets it—he’s scared [of losing his business].”Too little, too late for the Licensing Board.“We were given that reassurance the second time,” Chairwoman Christine Pulgini said, per UHub.Mr. Nguyen can appeal the revocation with the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, according to UHub, but the phone lines are down at Pho So 1.Pho So 1’s seafood pho hai san was among several destination-worthy bowls. Photo via APAs a plethora of fitness studios flock to Back Bay with grand plans to open and, hopefully, flourish in the center of the city—one of them, which has been there since 2014, will close its doors.BSC Lab, a branch of Boston Sports Club, with the intention to serve boutique fitness-goers, is closing at the end of the month. The company sent a note to members saying that the gym space would no longer be in operation as of March 1 and that all memberships would be cancelled. The letter also informed customers that in its place will be a TB12 Sports Therapy Center, Tom Brady and Alex Guerrero’s fitness venture that was first opened in 2013 at Patriots Place in Foxborough. The one coming to Copley Square will only be the second one of its kind.bye bye bsc labs. hello tb12 sports…?i’m sad to see this place go. i learned how to lift weights with @CassieBstrong here!who knows a good boston gym with group weight lifting classes at a decent price? i’m thinking healthworks. pic.twitter.com/UXJ77zFLxv— caroline markey 🌃 (@caromarkey) February 6, 2019The closing of this BSC location doesn’t just mark the end for the company’s aim at boutique fitness, it also signals the end for other fitness ventures that operated out of the space like spin studio Cyc fitness and an athletic-based group fitness studio Tone House. A representative for the Cyc spin studio told the Globe that they will have to close but are “already in the planning stages to return to Boston soon in a bigger way than before.”Also to note, Kelly Brabants, of Booty By Brabants, hosted her signature high-intensity, dance-inspired classes at the Lab, but fortunately you can still catch her at Equinox in the Seaport.Even though this BSC was different than all the rest, with more upscale amenities and a higher price point, the Globe reported that the closing comes because of its proximity to other BSC locations—one just down the street on Boylston, one on Newbury near the Hynes MBTA stop, and another one close to the Prudential Center. If you ask us, we think that’s just the point of BSC though—to give you easy access to any facility, pretty much anywhere in the city—but that’s just us.In the meantime, you can get excited to check out the new TB12 facility soon where you can receive customized, sport-specific fitness programming that incorporates recovery, hydration, and nutrition metrics. Just leave all the extraneous stuff—like sugar, nightshades, strawberries, and joy—at home so that you, too, can train just like the GOAT.last_img read more
